Expressive Arts

Curricular music is a particular strength for RGC with a dedicated music centre, including a technology studio. All pupils in S1 and 2 follow a common course covering performing skills on both keyboard and guitar, creative work, musical literacy and listening and responding to a variety of musical styles. Individual tuition is also available in a wide range of instruments. The College has five choirs, two orchestras, two concert bands and various smaller ensembles. They perform frequently in Aberdeen, and the senior groups travel further afield in Scotland as well as touring in Europe and the USA. Even though our best individual performers gain places at the top Music Colleges, we never forget that music is for everyone.

The department offers a wide and varied range of extra-curricular activities which are available to all pupils. There are Drama Clubs for all year groups, which meet weekly and have an opportunity to present their work throughout the course of the year. House Drama competitions are run in the spring term and there is also the opportunity for pupils to participate in the annual whole school production performed at Aberdeen Arts Centre in November. Theatre visits are organised regularly, and are open to all pupils, as appropriate, and there are also a variety of opportunities for pupils to participate in externally run workshops and theatrical events.

Gordon's has a well established reputation for Art and many of our pupils gain places at Art Colleges. Our purpose built studios are alive with activity. Pupils have the opportunity to show their work in the school; photography is a particular strength. Drawing and observational skills are taught from the early years as our Art teachers believe that the ability to express yourself artistically is based on the ability to look.
