Countesswells Sports Field
Our playing fields and outdoor sports facilities at Countesswells are a short drive from our Schoolhill Campus. The 39 acre facilities support rugby, hockey, outdoor netball, cricket, athletics, football, tennis and gym activity.
Extensive grass rugby facilities boast three international sized rugby pitches with five other pitches alongside a large, fully floodlit training area.
Impressive hockey facilities comprise both an international standard water-based hockey pitch allowing our teams to play on the very best of surfaces and a full size, International Hockey Federation accredited, sand-dressed pitch. The latter pitch supports hockey as well as football, netball and, in the summer term, tennis played on twelve courts.
In the summer term, cricket is played on a high standard main grass square, a synthetic match wicket and four other grass wickets. Practice takes place in our three synthetic cricket nets and under the Grandstand, which houses a multi-purpose gymnasium with two indoor cricket nets. Our pupils participate in a wide variety of athletics events and use our own grass track at Countesswells.
The investment in quality evident at our playing fields reflects the importance the College places on curricular Games and team sports. Visiting teams comment on the exceptional quality of the grass and synthetic pitches, whether for rugby in front of the 335 seat Grandstand, or for cricket or hockey.
These facilities are well used for curricular Games across our Junior and Senior schools from Primary 3 upwards every week. On Saturday morning the pitches are a hive of activity for school teams of all ages and the Parents Association help to provide meals and refreshments for visiting teams, tea/coffee and breakfast rolls for the spectators and the whole Gordon’s community. It is a venue that needs to be visited, particularly on a match day to experience the life and energy that our pupils enjoy.
Further, our commitment to public benefit is demonstrated by the facilities, when not in school use, being used extensively by Gordonian Sports sections and other child and adult community sports clubs seven days a week from morning in to the late evening. Our grass football pitches have been referred to by an informed commentator as "the best in the country".
The Holiday Club which is available to children in the Robert Gordon's Junior School is situated in the pavilion at Countesswells.
