Social Studies

We have recently developed our Social Studies programme in line with the Curriculum for Excellence; ideas of cross-curricular learning, pupil choice and employment of an active teaching and learning methodology.

In our topic choices we have kept to the three broad aspects of Social Studies:  History, Geography and Modern Studies (including an emphasis on Enterprise).  Geography topics are close to home at P1-P3 and expand to exciting countries abroad in P4-P7.  Within the study of foreign countries, comparison with the UK is always built in.  In History, we span the timeline from Ancient Scotland to the 20th Century. At P3-P7 the emphasis is on Scottish history.  We have developed an exciting cross-curricular approach between Social Studies and Expressive Arts.  Some of the Social Studies learning outcomes are delivered through Art, Drama or Music.

Although learning outcomes in order for progression are planned by the Class Teachers, pupils are involved in choosing from several activities which deliver the same learning outcomes.  The programme involves workshops across the year group, visits to places of interest, visiting speakers and outdoor learning. Pupils spend approximately 2 hours a week on social studies.
