About the Parents' Association
Robert Gordon's College Parents' Association was founded in 1983. Its aims are:
The Association represents all parents and guardians of pupils across the Nursery, Junior and Senior Schools and all parents and legal guardians of the school's pupils are members automatically. The PA is now over 20 years old, and it is still very active in all three areas.
The day to day business of the Association is undertaken by a Committee. An Annual General Meeting is held in each academic year and Committee members are elected at that meeting. The Committee acts as the interface between the College staff and the parents. It is also responsible for organising the social and fundraising events that take place during each academic year. As far as possible, membership of the Committee is drawn evenly from the Senior School and the Junior School and Nursery, representing as many year groups as possible. The Committee meets on average once a month.
The Chair and Vice Chair hold regular informal meetings with the Head of College and the Head of the Junior School to discuss items of mutual interest. These are two-way discussions which ensure a flow of information between the College the PA Committee and parents. The Chair will take items to these meetings from the Committee and will report on the outcome of the meeting to the next Committee meeting.
Assisting the College
Most Parents' Associations raise funds for their school, and we are no different. In past years, we have funded the purchase of the minibus, stage curtains, computer equipment, lockers for all S1 and S2 pupils, sports equipment such as wind shelters, musical instruments, specialist audio-visual equipment and play equipment for the Junior School playground. The Association has also assisted the School by upgrading the equipment for the pipe band and with the development of drama facilities.
The Committee also aims to assist the College in other practical ways, for example by organising and providing refreshments at College events, by being on hand to meet parents at the S1 Guidance Evening, Senior School Coffee mornings and at the annual Open Morning.
Social Events
The Committee puts a lot of effort into social events, which we see as being a very important part of our activities.
The Committee organises the Christmas Fair and the Founder's Day Ball each year, along with providing the organisation and support for the refreshments at Sports Day. The Christmas Fair is the principal fundraising event of the year.
Students and parents can also purchase or retrieve items of uniform from the Lost Property cupboard in the Dining Hall, which is open every Thursday lunchtime from 1-2 pm.
The second hand book sale for the Senior School is usually held on the last Monday of the Summer Term.
Contact with Parents
The Committee keeps parents informed of its activities in a number of ways. News is issued in the school newsletter From the Quadrangle which is published 5 times a year; notices and invitations are sent to all parents about individual activities well before they occur; regular events are mentioned in the College Calendar issued to all pupils; and the Head of College mentions upcoming events in his letters to parents.
You are already a member of the Association, but if you would like to become more involved with the work of the Committee, and/or help out at any of the events we would love to hear from you. Please contact Nigel Jones, the Chair of the RGC PA - Nigel Jones
