The Elder Cup

Posted: Monday 9 October 2017

Our fourth annual Elder Cup Debating Competition took place in early October with 16 pupils participating in the first round, debating the motion, 'This House Would Offer State Subsidies to Companies with Female Leadership'. The standard was very high, and it was challenging for the judges to choose between some very talented young people.

Eight pupils progressed to the final: Val and Lloyd (both S6); Molly (S6) and Beth (S4); Nivi and Emma (both S4); and Pranav and Ishani (both S5). The short prep final motion was 'This House Would Ban Video Games in which the Player Engages in Brutal and Immoral Violence in a Realistic Setting' and, again, the standard was very high.

Ultimately, Molly and Beth were crowned the victors, and were presented their trophy by Mr Elder, who praised the pupils for a spirited and accomplished debate.

Many thanks to Emily England, Gail McNeill, Jane Garstin, Nathan Adam, Maura Buchanan and Lauren Howes for their help with judging.
