Geography

The Geography Department has six members of staff and aims to encourage pupils to take an interest in the world around them.

Pupils follow a common course in S1 and S2. S1 pupils explore their local environment around the school campus, the city centre and at Aberdeen beach. In S2, pupils study places far away from Aberdeen including coral reefs, rainforests and the last wilderness, Antarctica. In S3 pupils opting to continue with Geography enjoy active lessons studying Hot Rocks and Crowded Places before embarking on the National 4/5 Geography course. At the end of S3 and start of S4 Geography pupils go out of the classroom to conduct fieldwork in Aberdeen and Stonehaven. As part of our National 5 courses, pupils also complete the Added Value Unit for National 4 which in Geography takes the form of an assignment based on independent research.

Many pupils continue to study Geography at Higher level investigating a wide range of new Human, Physical and Environmental Geography topics including Glaciation and Development and Health. Every two years an expedition of S4 and S5 pupils go to Iceland. In S6 some pupils complete the Advanced Higher course with a focus on specialised independent study. Geology is also available for S6 pupils to study at Intermediate 1 level.

The departmental facilities include a seminar and study room for Advanced Higher candidates.
