Winners of the Annual Solo Piping and Drumming Competition Announced

The Annual RGC Solo Piping and Drumming Competition moved online to continue sharing and celebrating the piping and drumming talents throughout the College.

Mr Sumner, Piping Instructor said: “Over 90 video submissions were entered from pupils in P5 up to S6 displaying a range of piping and drumming disciplines which encouraged healthy competition within the band whilst raising the musical ability of individual pipers and drummers.

“Changing up the format to video submission rather than the traditional in-person event meant that entrants had to think creatively about the production and musical content of their submissions. The winning submissions can be viewed at the end of this article.”

This year a new Freestyle event was introduced and was open to all pipers across all year group categories and submission for this element of the competition are below.

Piping and Drumming Qualifications

The annual competition may be over for another year but the hive of activity from the Robert Gordon’s College Pipe Band continues with online tuition and securing qualifications.

Piping and drumming qualifications have been incorporated into the pipe band tuition syllabus for pupils wishing to sit the certificates. Qualifications are not compulsory and offer entry levels for all abilities and experience from beginner to advanced.

The qualifications in Scottish Bagpipes and Scottish Pipe Band Drumming are validated and certificated jointly by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and the Pipe Band Qualifications Board (PDQB) and are available nationally and internationally through four PDQB Examinations Centres.

Over 50 pipers and drummers successfully completed their PDQB examinations this month.
