CCF commemorates Falklands War

Forty years since the Falklands War, pipers from across the world were encouraged to come together in June to remember those who fell and were injured during the conflict.

RGC CCF held a memorial service at 11am on June 18th as part of the national commemorations. The service was led by Rev Louis Kinsey QVRM TD VR and featured readings by senior cadets.  This was followed by pipers playing “The Crags of Mount Tumbledown”. This iconic march was composed on the back of a ration packet by 2nd Battalion Scots Guards Pipe Major James Riddell from Stonehaven while under intense Argentine fire on the remote Falklands hillside in June 1982.

At a reception which followed our event, two presentations were made. Lord Lieutenant for The City of Aberdeen David Cameron presented the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet Badge and Certificate to CCF RAF Section Sgt Daisy N.

Daisy, an exceptional young lady who has made an extremely strong contribution to our CCF and to the school through music, sport and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, has her sights set on a career with the Royal Air Force. She will serve as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Aberdeen from June 2022 until June 2023.

Pipe Major Smith, who leads our 180-strong pipers and drummers, has been invaluable in the training and organisation of our musicians and was awarded the Gordon Campbell Sword. This was gifted to the contingent by the parents of former pupil and cadet Cpl Gordon Campbell, Royal Marines and Special Boat Service, who was killed on active duty in 2006. Gordon’s parents visit the College each year to make the presentation and are pictured here with daughter Cheryl and Pipe Major Smith.
