CCF Update: Summer 2025

Army
The annual Field Days take place during the early summer term in preparation for the annual summer camp. Members of the Army Section took part in an overnight exercise at RM Condor in Arbroath, putting into practice the fieldcraft theory lessons learned during the winter Tuesday training sessions at Schoolhill.

Fieldcraft is an integral part of the Army Cadets’ syllabus. It combines many of the skills the cadets have learned in a challenging yet enjoyable way. The subject also provides senior cadets with an excellent opportunity to practise and develop their leadership and administrative abilities.

Fieldcraft training is an excellent way of developing character and learning to operate as part of a team. While individual skills must be of a high standard, many objectives can only be achieved by working together.

Cadets from across the Army Section deployed to Barry Buddon Training Area to attend the CCF Central Summer Camp. The training programme for the week included an inter camp competition, an overnight tactical exercise, leadership and teamwork and a comprehensive live firing package.

Senior Cadets will now put these skills to the test at the National Military Skills Competition at the end of September. This competition is designed to be challenging, enjoyable, and rewarding, while testing cadets within the parameters of the Cadet Force syllabus.

RAF
This summer was packed with adventure, achievement, and unforgettable memories for the RGC RAF Section. A group of cadets headed to Aviemore for the RAF Summer Camp 2025, enjoying the perfect balance of military exposure and adventurous activities. Highlights included a fascinating visit to RAF Lossiemouth, paddleboarding at Loch Morlich, canoeing in Loch Insch, and a soaring experience at Cairngorm Gliding Club. Evenings were spent with movie nights, quizzes, and plenty of laughter - creating lasting memories.

Congratulations to S5 pupil Eesha, who attended the Regional RAF Space Camp at Leuchars Station and was awarded Best Cadet. Squadron Leader Ashley Brooks, Camp Commandant, commented: "In recognition of her outstanding performance, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the Silver Space Course, Cadet Eesha consistently demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for learning, actively engaging with all aspects of the programme. Her eagerness to contribute, willingness to learn, support her peers and readiness to answer and explore challenging questions set her apart as a standout participant. Her conduct throughout the course has been exemplary and reflects the qualities of a future leader and instructor within the Cadet Space Syllabus."

Hemish (S4) and Fg Off Montgomery also represented the section at the Royal Air Force Air Cadets’ National Air and Space Camp at RAF Syerston, Nottinghamshire. Alongside 300 cadets and 140 adults, they took part in an intensive, individually-tailored programme covering satellite communications and tracking, cyber, robotics, STEM, VR and simulation - all under the guidance of experienced aerospace instructors and senior cadets.

Congratulations to Blair, who achieved Gold First Aid, the highest level of training available to cadets across Scotland and Northern Ireland. This prestigious award not only recognises his commitment and skill but also qualifies him to teach the First Aid syllabus up to Silver level (St John Ambulance Activity First Aid), passing his expertise on to fellow cadets.

Pipe Band
This summer, the RGC Pipe Band proudly represented the College at thirty-five community events, sharing the sound and spirit of Scotland with audiences near and far. The highlight of the season was their performance at the Crew Highland Games during the Tall Ships 2025 celebrations at Aberdeen Sports Village. Mr Sumner, CCF Contingent Commander, commented: “Our Pipe Band were looking forward to representing Robert Gordon's College in the Tall Ships celebrations as part of our continued community engagement programme. We were proud to be involved in what was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Some members of our pipe band performed at the opening of the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship Legends Tour 2025 and the DP World Tour Nexo Championship 2025 at Trump International Scotland. Against the stunning backdrop of the Balmedie coastline, the pupils impressed the audience with their exceptional piping and drumming skills.

Closer to home, the band enjoyed their annual summer camp, three days of dedicated tuition and practice that culminated in a spirited public performance at Union Terrace Gardens. It was wonderful to welcome pupils from schools across the area. Surrounded by family, friends, and members of the public, the event was a fitting celebration of music, teamwork, and community spirit - a memorable finale to a remarkable summer for the RGC Pipe Band.

Mr Sumner was delighted to perform alongside Larry (now S1) at the 100th birthday celebration of John Adamson, former Head Groundsman of Seafield Playing Fields. Marking his centenary with family and friends at Aberdeenshire Cricket Club, John enjoyed sharing stories about his time at Robert Gordon’s College. His son Ian shared: “John is very proud of his Aberdeen roots and in particular his connection to Robert Gordon's College, so he was delighted to hear the pipers from RGC. John still meets with some Old Gordonians for coffee so you can tell it has a special place in his life.”

The Highland Games piping season primarily takes place during the summer months, typically from May through to early autumn, with peak activity in July and August. Throughout the summer holidays, our pipers have been representing the College, competing at local and national competitions, with our pipers featuring regularly in the prize lists.

Together, these achievements highlight the dedication, talent, and adventurous spirit of our CCF sections - a summer of learning, leadership, and memorable experiences.
