S5 pupil appointed Lord Lieutenant's Cadet, Aberdeen City

We are delighted to announce that CCF RAF Section Cpl Daisy N (S5) has been appointed Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for the City of Aberdeen.

Daisy will take up her new position from Armed Forces Day on 25 June 2022 for a one year period where she succeeds S6 pupil, Sgt Anish S.

Wg Cdr Montgomery shared: "Daisy has stood out as a young lady of considerable potential from her earliest days with the CCF and is known for her total commitment to all she undertakes.

"She rapidly acquired military skills and knowledge and gaining qualifications in communications, shooting and other skills, she has also successfully undertaken the Method of Instruction course and is a very capable instructor. A particular strength has been her contribution to the supervision and training of our 60 CCF recruits this session. She has also gained a place on the prestigious Air Cadet Leadership Course at RAF Cranwell in July 2022.

"Daisy has made a very full contribution to the wider life of the College over the last 5 years. She is working towards Gold Level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, is an enthusiastic and able vice-captain of the school’s 2nd Hockey XI and plays trombone with one of our music groups. Her experience of both powered flying and gliding through the CCF, although limited by Covid, has served to confirm her long-held and firm commitment to pursuing a career as a pilot with the Royal Air Force.

"She sees beyond the specific skills she has acquired and, as she puts it herself, values 'being welcomed into the tight-knit Cadet community' and 'the real test of character when given responsibility' as being central to her CCF experience. We wish her well in her new role."

The Lord Lieutenant's Cadet is seen as the aide and representative of the Cadet Forces to the British Royal Family and the Lord Lieutenant in an administrative county of Scotland, England, Wales & Northern Ireland.

The individual provides an essential link between the Armed Forces and the local community and may assist with recruiting within the Cadet Forces and with the local Reserve Forces and Cadets Association. The cadet is selected and appointed based on their outreach and participation within their unit, and is seen as one of the highest achievements in the Cadet Forces.

Senior Cadet Instruction Cadre

Congratulations to newly promoted Sergeant Catherine G and Sergeant Blair G who completed the Senior Cadet Instruction Cadre.

Capt Paul said: "The week long course taught them how to plan and deliver lessons to fellow cadets whilst enhancing their own knowledge and skills. Run by the 51 Brigade Cadet Training Team at Gordon Barracks, the pupils completed the training during the Easter Holidays."

Anzac Day

Anzac Day, 25th April, is one of Australia's most important national occasions. It commemorates the anniversary of the landing of soldiers from Australia and New Zealand, the Anzacs, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The campaign cost the lives of some 8,000 Anzacs. On the anniversary, all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served are remembered. In Aberdeen, the occasion featured during the morning service at St Machar’s Cathedral, conducted by Rev Sarah Brown, on Sunday 24th April.

With COVID restrictions still very much in mind during preparations this year, events on the day were restricted. School Captain, Otaki Scholar and Lord Lieutenant's Cadet Anish S (S6) read the lessons during the service and CCF Contingent Commander Wg Cdr Montgomery also attended, representing the College. We are grateful to organisers Dr Alan Fenwick and Col Roger Jagger for the invitation to participate, continuing the tradition of our Otaki Scholar playing a significant part in the service and acknowledging the close link between the College and New Zealand.
