Building confidence and expression through Declamations 2025

Our annual Declamations competition is a highlight in the Junior School calendar, offering Primary 5 to 7 pupils a wonderful opportunity to develop their confidence, expression, and appreciation for poetry. This event enriches many areas of their language learning, particularly Listening and Talking, as well as Writing.

All children from Primary 5 to 7 had selected a poem to learn as part of their homework. Pupils chose from a wide range of poets, including Rudyard Kipling, Roald Dahl, A. A. Milne, and T.S. Elliot.

Every pupil first recited their poem in class, after which teachers selected two finalists from each class in P5, P6, and P7. These finalists went on to perform in front of all P4 to 7 pupils in the MacRobert Hall on Friday, 28th November, where their recitations were judged by Mrs Ficken, Junior School Librarian, and Mrs Tulloch, Head of Junior School.

While the judges deliberated on the overall and year group winners, P7 pupil William shared a traditional Chinese reading, followed by performances of songs from members of the Beauty and the Beast cast.

Mrs MacLeod, Deputy Head of Junior School, highlighted: “The Declamations competition is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to build confidence and showcase their creativity, and develop their communication skills. Its purpose is to encourage children to develop and share an appreciation and love of poetry.

“The afternoon featured impressive recitations with the award of the prestigious Declamations Trophy to the overall winner. Declamations 2025 was not only an opportunity for pupils to shine on stage but also a celebration of the joy of poetry, expression, and stage confidence - an inspiring and memorable event for everyone involved.”
