A strong finish for action-packed football season

The RGC Football season kicked off in August 2024 with a newly structured curriculum rolled out across our Junior and Senior School. Our U18s began with a pre-season training, setting the stage for an exciting year.

Throughout this academic year, Junior School players have trained on the following themes; releases, receives, retain, regain, runs, risks, 1v1s and set pieces. Meanwhile, Senior School players focused on building the attack, creating the attack, finishing the attack, press, balance, cover, 1v1s, and set pieces.

September saw the launch of the inaugural Football Countesswells Cup for S1 and S2 pupils, where we were delighted to host St Leonard’s College and Albyn School in a multi-format tournament. Robert Gordon’s College topped the group stage in both the S1 and S2 tournaments with RGC S1 winning the final against Albyn and RGC S2 winning their final against RGC B team.

Our Junior and Senior Girls’ football reached new heights during their year-round sessions.Being expertly led by Mr Watson and Mrs West, participation in girls’ football was at an all-time high. Our U18 girls made history, playing their first ever 11v11 game, securing a fantastic 4-0 away win against Gordonstoun.

In September, the boys’ league campaigns had an incredibly strong start. While our U18 team had a brilliant run in the Scottish Independent Schools league, reaching the semi-finals after an unbeaten group stage, it was also a highly rewarding season for our S1-S3 teams. Playing a successful first season in the local league competition, both our S1 and S3 teams finished as runners-up, and the S2 boys clinched the league title on the final day.

S1 - Mr Gibson

“The S1s kicked off the year really well by winning the Countesswells Cup and followed that up with some strong performances in the league and various cups, finishing runners-up in the league. They have massively improved over the course of the season, both as individuals and as a team, gaining a better understanding of the game which will set them up well for S2.”

S2 - Mr Christie

“What an extraordinary season this group of players have had! Coaching this group of S2 players has been an absolute privilege and a true highlight of my year. From the first training session to the final whistle of the season, the resilience, and team spirit shown by every single player have been fantastic.

“Together, we achieved something truly special - an undefeated season, whereby we won both the league title and the regional cup - making RGC history. These accomplishments are a testament not only to the talent and hard work of the squad but also to the belief that grew stronger with every match. Here’s to a truly remarkable season - undefeated, unstoppable, and unforgettable.”
