Former pupils success in the arts

We are delighted to announce that two of our former pupils, Jonny Reeks, Class of '20 and Rory Gilmore, Class of '19 have had fantastic success in the arts this year, both of whom are further developing their careers in automation. During their time at the College, Rory mentored Jonny whilst working behind the scenes of many school shows together.

Jonny has landed an exciting new position as Automation Dep on the hit West End show 'Wicked'. Jonny is currently in his 2nd year at Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he is studying Technical theatre and whilst at the College, was one of the 2020 Craig Award recipients.

Jonny said: “I am thrilled to have had my first job on the West End with Wicked. It is such a well known show but the amount which goes on backstage is just thrilling to watch. Thanks to all of the staff in the Drama department at RGC for getting me my start with backstage work.”

Miss Boyne, Teacher of Drama shared: "We are all extremely proud of Jonny and delighted that all his hard work is paying off. We look forward to welcoming him back to school with the hope that he might be able to make Mr Macpherson fly in an assembly!"

Rory has also had success in his professional career after securing his first contract aboard a Walt Disney Cruise Line Bahamian Cruise.

Speaking about his time at college, Rory highlighted, "The freedom to explore my creativity and utilise the equipment the College had to offer was pivotal to my ability to pursue a career in creative arts. From performing in school shows in first and second year, the opportunities that were then made available really sparked my interest in technical theatre and with the support of the staff and fellow students, I was able to begin my career with a solid ground in lighting, sound and AV. The facilities at Robert Gordon's College are the real proof that education isn't about achieving the best grades in your exams. Success is based upon finding something you're passionate about and pursuing happiness."

Miss Boyne added: "We recently welcomed back Rory who is just about to Graduate in Production from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Rory has already managed to secure his first professional contract working for the main man himself, Mickey Mouse! Rory will be joining the Disney dream cruise and travelling from Florida to the Bahamas. It's a tough life! Rory's takes on the role of Entertainment Automation Rigger.

"We are so excited for Rory, and a little bit jealous of his new adventures. Rory was a student within many school shows and even came back to work for us for a year as our Graduate assistant. We are really proud that our former pupils are being offered amazing opportunities before they have even graduated. Both Rory and Jonny were so dedicated to the Drama department and we wish them all the best for the future."
