Pupils in the Green Beans Sustainability Club have had the pleasure of learning from Suki Zhang, MIT student and visiting teacher, to learn about MIT’s approach to designing a zero carbon campus, building greater resilience into all campus activities, infrastructure and systems, to make MIT a more sustainable institution.
Suki is currently studying a double major in Computer Sciences, Economics, Data Science and Business Analytics at MIT and has a strong interest in sustainability. Being a member of the MIT Waste Watchers group, has enabled Suki to participate in a number of sustainability initiatives that contribute to the steps that are being taken to achieve their goals for sustainability. Suki has enjoyed encouraging the MIT community to reduce, reuse and recycle and was excited when she learned RGC Junior School have their own Sustainability Club.
Mrs Robertson, Lead for Sustainability, commented, “The Green Beans had a wonderful time meeting Suki to hear about the excellent sustainable Zero Waste initiative which she is involved in at MIT. Her visit has sparked great discussion and the exchange of new ideas. Our P6 and P7 pupils are excited to have generated new ideas with Suki and will continue to work on these ideas for RGC as we move forward with sustainability in the Junior School in 2022.”
P7 pupil Orson said: "Suki was inspirational and creative and she gave us lots of ideas which are practical and sustainable."
P6 pupil Julian added: "It is really interesting how Suki has organised the Zero Waste Initiative at MIT. I did not know that oil on cardboard which is incorrectly put in the recycling will contaminate the whole recycling bin."
Suki thoroughly enjoyed working with pupils in the Junior School and added, “Meeting the Green Beans was definitely the highlight of my time here at RGC. The enthusiasm the pupils had for pushing sustainability at RGC and beyond was so inspiring, and I really learned a lot from them. The Green Beans members are changemakers in the community, and I am excited to see what else they accomplish in the future.”
