We are proud to share that Louise B (S5) has been presented with the Ken Muir Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to learning and development through her involvement with Powering Futures.

The award forms part of the Powering Futures programme, which celebrates learners and contributors who demonstrate strong growth in leadership, teamwork, communication, and resilience while working on real-world challenges linked to future careers and sustainability.

Reflecting on the award, Louise shared: “Powering Futures was one of my S5 highlights. It was unique in terms of everything else I have done at school and addressed valuable skills for my future employment. Powering Futures has honed my abilities in a number of areas, most notably communication and using both initiative and critical thinking skills in a group setting. I would recommend Powering Futures to all!” 

The Ken Muir Award recognises individuals who have made a meaningful impact through their commitment, development, and engagement within the Powering Futures experience. Rather than focusing solely on academic outcomes, the award highlights progress, effort, and the ability to contribute positively to team-based projects.

Louise’s contribution reflects the programme’s wider aim of helping young people build confidence and experience beyond the classroom, preparing them for future pathways in education and employment. Speaking about the recognition, Louise highlighted the value of the shared experience and the importance of creating opportunities for young people to explore future careers in a supportive and practical environment.

Dr Gray, Head of Geography, said: “This is the third year Robert Gordon’s College pupils have taken up the Powering Futures Challenge and the third time pupils have had an amazing experience like no other in their school curriculum. Louise spent the year having fun working in a team developing solutions to real world challenges. She loved going to the home of the Dons, Pittodrie, where she presented the final solution professionally to business judges as well as creating a TikTok of their journey to the event. Louise got so much out of the year-long challenge and now wishes she could do it all again!

 “Alongside her involvement in the programme, Louise has studied Higher Geography, English, Maths and PE this year, in addition to playing for the first XI hockey team, further demonstrating her commitment to a broad and balanced learning experience.”

Under the expert guidance and encouragement of Dr Gray and Mrs Blue, the pupil experience has gone from strength to strength. As our first ever S5 participant, Louise has demonstrated leadership and confidence; we are very proud of her achievements and look forward to her mentoring next year’s cohort.”
