Law professional from Brodies LLP joins Senior Debating Club

In one of the last Senior Debating Club meets of 2021, Susie Mountain Associate and Solicitor Advocateat Brodies LLP joined to share her knowledge with pupils.

Debating the topic “Should prisoners be denied the right to vote?”, Susie posed questions to the group of pupils from S3 to S6 to help further build their arguments and strengthen their skills. The pupils were split into opposing groups to formulate their points which will be trailed in a formal debate in the coming months.

Following the session, Susanna Mountain shared: “It strikes me that many of the skills involved in appearing in court are utilised in the forum of a debate. I was hugely impressed by the level of preparation, enthusiasm and engagement exhibited by the pupils involved in the club, a number of whom tell me they aspire to a career in law themselves.

“I look forward to a return to the College to hear them in action, although I will confess to feeling rather daunted at the prospect of appearing against some of them in court in the future!”

Miss Colquhoun, Senior School Teacher, leads the club and added, “I am immensely grateful to Susie for supporting our Debating Club. Visits from industry experts enhances the knowledge of the themes and issues we debate and act as inspiration for our pupils who are never far from thinking about their future careers. I look forward to further developing our Debating Club and welcoming more guests in 2022.”
