Future Pathways: Eight National 5 As provide a strong foundation for Engineering

Mihir is celebrating an outstanding set of S4 results, achieving eight National 5s at Grade A across Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science, Economics, English, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish, along with the top grade of 9 in GCSE Level 2 Further Mathematics.

The results have provided strong support for Mihir’s plans to study Engineering at university. “I want to study Engineering in University, and these results have been very reassuring in my choice of course,” Mihir said. He plans to continue with his chosen STEM-focused Highers this session and is looking forward to building on his interests and knowledge.

Balancing academic study with downtime and co-curricular activities was one of the challenges of S4. Mihir found that making time for at least some study every day helped him retain his knowledge across all his subjects. “It has been tough to balance my studies, downtime and extracurriculars after school each weekday,” he explained, “yet ensuring that every day, I got in at least some study time allowed me to retain my knowledge on all subjects.”

Mihir also highlighted the valuable academic support provided by RGC. Additional help available after class gave him the opportunity to strengthen areas he found more challenging, while also allowing him to explore topics and interests beyond the core syllabus in subjects he particularly enjoyed.

“The extra support that the school gave on certain subjects after class time cannot be overlooked,” Mihir said. “It let me strengthen areas in the syllabus I found more challenging, as well as push ahead a bit to explore topics of interest in my favourite subjects.”

For Mihir, one of the most enjoyable aspects of school has been the start of each academic year. He particularly enjoyed the challenge of beginning a new subject, taking in a large amount of information and then working to make sense of it independently at home.

“I quite enjoyed the first few lessons of each subject every year,” Mihir reflected. “It’s usually a lot of information all at once in those beginning weeks, and I find it fun to try and make sense of it all at home at once.”

Beyond the classroom, Mihir has also made a positive contribution to the local community through volunteering at Cults Tennis Club, where he mentored younger pupils during weekly lessons. This experience has provided an opportunity to support younger players while developing communication, responsibility and interpersonal skills.

With eight National 5 A grades, a clear interest in STEM and valuable experience supporting younger members of the community, Mihir has established a strong foundation for the next stage of his education.

As he progresses into S5, Mihir will continue to develop their STEM interests and work towards their ambition of studying Engineering at university.
