The excitement around the campus is infectious this week as we welcome the return of the first Senior School Show since 2019. Bringing the hit musical Oliver! to the Craig Centre for Performing Arts, pupils delighted their opening night audience of over 150 guests.

Mr Milarvie, Head of Drama shared: “This year has been a huge collaborative effort and as ever the cast, orchestra, technical and production teams have been working tirelessly to create another highly professional and enjoyable theatrical experience. Also, the production would not have been possible without the amazing support of the Robert Gordon’s College Parents’ Association who assisted with the amazing set, props and costumes. We are also grateful to Aberdeen Youth Music Theatre (AYMT) who helped provide some additional costumes.”

S1 pupil Joshua, who plays the role of Oliver said: “It is amazing to be able to play the role of Oliver in the school play. I have really enjoyed rehearsals and all the songs and acting I have to play in the show. I have really enjoyed having the opportunity to play Oliver in the performance and hope that all goes well on the big nights.”

Playing the part of ‘Nancy’, Isla (S6) added: “It has been a real honour to play the role of Nancy in the school show this year. Oliver! Is one of my favourite musicals, with lots of great chorus numbers, and Nancy has been a dream role for me. She is a strong character, with a tough exterior, but a heart of gold. It’s been such fun playing Nancy in chorus numbers such as “Oom Pah Pah“ and “It’s a Fine life”, but also showing the softer, vulnerable side to her with her solo number “As long as he needs me”. The whole experience has been enjoyable from the outset of rehearsals. It’s been an opportunity to work with and get to know pupils from various year groups, and I’ve made lovely friends. Everyone is so supportive of one another, and Mr Milarvie and Ms Boyne always offer lots of encouragement. It’s so nice to see everyone grow in confidence as rehearsals progress. And the buzz of show week is unbeatable, seeing everyone smash it on stage is so exhilarating. I would recommend anyone to get involved, you will be welcomed and won’t regret it.”

Mr Haggart, Head of Music summarised: “It has been wonderful to see our talented pupils rising to the challenge of staging “Oliver!” this term. There has been a huge amount of hard work from everyone involved. On top of the considerable on-stage achievements, I am very happy that this year we have been able to involve several of our senior pupils in the 16-piece orchestra. Having the opportunity to play along with teachers and some local musicians is giving them a fantastic experience.”

Pupils have been at the heart of the whole creative process. The Production Club designed the show posters and tickets with a large number of pupils gaining experience in backstage production including from lighting and sound in the booth to set, costume and make-up. The Charities Committee is also raising funds for AberNessities and Home-Start Aberdeen by selling snacks and refreshments as well as welcoming any donations during each performance.

This timeless classic tells the story of Oliver, an orphan who escapes the workhouse and takes to the streets of 19th Century London. He meets the Artful Dodger and is taken in by a group of street urchins led by Fagin. He is educated in the art of pick-pocketing as he searches for a home and a family of his own. Oliver takes us on a journey in search of love, belonging and honour among thieves, which will leave the audience wanting more.
