P4 discover medieval skills at Templars’ park

Our P4 pupils recently visited Templars’ Park Scout Campsite for a day of outdoor learning, linking their current studies of Scottish medieval history with a range of practical, hands-on activities in the woodland setting.

Throughout the day, the pupils participated in a number of activities, including working together to chop vegetables, preparing ‘stone soup’, learning how to safely start and manage a campfire, and attempting to bake bread to accompany the broth. Later, they put their navigation skills to the test in an orienteering challenge around the site, applying their map-reading knowledge in a real outdoor environment.

The activities encouraged teamwork among peers, while helping pupils consider the practical skills that people in medieval times would have relied upon.

Mr Taylor, Head of Outdoor Education, shared: “The day provided a valuable balance of learning, exploration and time outdoors. Alongside the planned activities, pupils also enjoyed discovering the natural environment around them, with some of the most exciting things found in the unplanned - like leaf skeletons, various bugs or watching the birds. Before heading back to school, they tasted the broth, some claiming it was the best they had ever had!”
