Welcoming teachers from across Scotland, we were delighted to host an Advanced Higher Physics CPD event in The Wood Foundation Centre for Science and Technology.
Ms Brand, Physics Technician, shared: “As our AH Physics Teacher CPD day event in May 2023 went extremely well we were really pleased to be able to have the opportunity to host the event again this year. From our network of previous attendees we were able to learn from their experience to enhance, modify and add new experiments to make it a versatile event for both regular and new physics teachers delivering AH projects later in the year.
“This event would not run smoothly without the knowledge and input from Graham Sangster (former RGC pupil and Assisted Head of Physics), Sandy Caldwell (former Head of Physics at Mintlaw Academy), and Dr Sandra Lonie along with the rest of the Physics team at Robert Gordon’s College. We would like to also show deep gratitude to Roy Gillanders, University of Aberdeen, for his engineering skills, significant interest and background contribution.
“The 2024 event was aimed at Physics teachers from all schools keen to work through Advanced Higher experiments from construction to end results, as their pupils would. It was a great networking session and an amalgamation of experience and ideas shared with all who attended. This CPD event has been received very positively to continue as an annual occurrence.”
Feedback from some of the teachers in attendance included:
“The atmosphere was always welcoming, friendly and relaxed. Particularly appreciated that I was given free range to attempt the practicals of my choice. This was an outstanding opportunity for ‘participant - participant’ and ‘participant - instructor’ chat.”
“I found the CPD day beneficial indeed. I attended a SSERC course earlier in the year with similar subject matter, but seeing the equipment deployed in an actual working classroom environment was very helpful for me.”
“Our CPD day offered a valuable opportunity to try out, discuss and develop a range of existing, and new, Advanced Higher investigation experiments. We are indebted to retired teachers Graham Sangster and Sandy Caldwell for their ideas and support.”
