S6 learn about freedom of the press and free speech

S6 pupils were treated to an excellent and thought provoking presentation on the importance of freedom of the press and free speech and by award winning journalist Sandy Bremner on Monday 14th January.

Sandy has won several of Scotland and Britain’s top accolades including UK Campaigning Journalist of the Year. He has championed free speech throughout his career, both at home and overseas. He worked for the BBC for nearly three decades as a reporter, producer and manager, retiring in late 2018 as Managing Editor for the North East and Northern Isles in addition to performing wider management roles.

Over the last decade, Sandy has also travelled extensively and worked with external organisations including BBC Media Action and the International Press Institute, promoting media freedom in some of the world’s most challenging regimes including Turkey, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Myanmar.
