Mandarin pupils celebrate three national awards at national speaking competition

There was a real buzz of excitement across the Languages department last week as a group of our S1-S5 pupils travelled to Edinburgh for the 10th SCEN Youth Summit and Chinese Speaking Competition. Held on 28 November 2025, the event brought together more than 200 pupils, with an audience of 300, from across Scotland, all enjoying the opportunity to celebrate Mandarin language and culture.

Throughout the day, our pupils took part in poem readings and musical performances in Mandarin, showing not only their language skills but also their creativity. Their efforts were recognised with some brilliant achievements:

  • Rachel C (S5) and Amelie R (S5) won Second Prize for their performance of the Mandarin version of the song ‘Remember Me’ from Coco. They also gave a speech in Mandarin about their learning journey, their future plan after school, they particularly mentioned they wanted to work in jobs related to international relations and Chinese language and culture.
  • Hermina D (S4) achieved First Prize for a beautifully delivered poem reading.
  • Our S3 group, Marley W, Keira F, Megan K, Jemi G, Summer T, Annie H, Abigail U, Kristina K, earned First Prize for their guitar and vocal performance of the Mandarin version of “Baby.” This was especially exciting as it’s the first time RGC has taken home this award.

Reflecting on the day, Mrs Adam, Teacher of Mandarin, said: “The judges and audience were highly impressed, but what really stayed with our pupils was the atmosphere of friendship and fun. They came back with stories of new connections, shared experiences and the joy of meeting others who are also learning Mandarin across Scotland.

“I am incredibly proud of our pupils. Their creativity and courage to perform in Mandarin on a national stage is inspiring. They represented Robert Gordon’s College beautifully, not only through their achievements, but through their kindness, teamwork and genuine love of learning.”

Mr Campbell, Head of Languages, added: “This is one of many things we are proud to see in our Languages programme, where pupils are encouraged to explore language as a way to connect with new people, new ideas and new opportunities. From our youngest learners in Nursery discovering their first characters, to our senior pupils preparing for external examinations, it has been a joy to watch Mandarin grow into such a vibrant and welcoming part of life at Robert Gordon’s College.

"Our integrated 3-18 approach to language learning enables pupils to leave school with a high level of proficiency in their chosen subject. We cannot underestimate the value of knowing a foreign language. Languages are far more than an impressive addition to a CV; they are a gateway to the world, equipping students with critical thinking skills, resilience, and the ability to communicate across cultures. Whether for travel, work, or personal growth, speaking another language is an invaluable asset that opens countless doors.

“A huge well done to all our pupils who took part. Their achievements reflect the effort they have put in throughout the year, and we can’t wait to see where their Mandarin journey takes them next.”

At Robert Gordon’s College, Mandarin is taught by our specialist teacher and introduced to Nursery children from age 3 through weekly lessons. In the Junior School, pupils study French and Spanish from P1, before experiencing a rotation of German, Mandarin and Spanish in P7, after which they select a modern language to continue in S1. In S1, pupils study one modern language, alongside Latin, choosing from French, German, Spanish or Mandarin, and in S2 they study two languages, preparing for future National Qualifications. The programme develops Talking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills, introduces grammar, builds vocabulary and provides insight into the culture and life of the countries where the languages are spoken. Pupils are supported by native-speaking language assistants, who enhance learning and help with examination preparation. In S4-S6, pupils continue at a more advanced level, further developing their language skills, cultural knowledge, and confidence in communication.
