Robert Gordon’s College was delighted to host the second Psychology Conference in The Craig Centre for Performing Arts.
Schools from across Scotland, including Strathallan School, Albyn School, Ullapool Academy, Millburn Academy, Hazelhead Academy, Kingussie High School and Meldrum Academy, attended a full day of lectures from a number of leading psychologists in their field.
Pupils had the opportunity to engage further with the speakers in a series of breakout workshops, where they explored their chosen topic further.
One of the schools that attended reflected: “The event was great! A lot of learning for my pupils and myself. My pupils found the most interesting talk to be the talk offered by Faye Skelton who discussed Forensic Psychology, false confessions.”
S6 pupil Anna shared: "I enjoyed the emotions workshop, led by Dr Emma Hepburn, because it was so interactive and I learnt that everyone experiences emotions differently."
Jonny added: "I was fascinated by the miscarriages of justice talk (Faye Skelton) because I am interested in studying criminology and joining the police force."
Speakers included Dr Emma Hepburn, known as "The Psychology Mum," who delved into ‘The Science of Emotions’. Dr Faye Skelton from Napier University, spoke with pupils about the ‘Miscarriages of Justice and False Confessions’.
Dr Susan Griffiths from RGU offered insights into the journey in the life of a psychologist while Dr Doug Martin of Aberdeen University talked about 'Rewriting the Script: Gender Stereotypes, Conformity, and the Impact of Generative AI.'
Dr Matt Barr from the University of Glasgow shared his research on ‘The positive Effects of Video Games’. Dr Jacqui Hutchison from the University of Aberdeen spoke with pupils on ‘Perceptual Illusions’.
We were delighted to welcome back former pupil Georgie, Class of 2024, to share her topic, ‘Studying Psychology: A Student's Perspective.’.
Mrs Smith, Head of Senior School concluded: “The Conference was a huge success with thought provoking talks and plenty of subject content to help pupils in their study of Psychology. My thanks go to all who attended and especially Mrs Vlaar and Mrs Wylde, our inspirational Psychology teachers at RGC who put so much effort into organising the event.”
