RGC rugby features return to Countesswells

There was a welcome return to many more of our co-curricular clubs this week after a successful start with Rugby and Hockey last week. Netball, Basketball, Badminton and Junior School Swim Clubs joined the long list of co-curricular sports clubs available to pupils and there will be more to follow in the coming weeks.

It has been fantastic to see the large number of pupils taking part, some perhaps trying some sports for the first time. It’s a great way for pupils to make new friends and to meet people from the other classes in their year group, in a more relaxed setting.

On Saturday we were very excited to host our first external fixtures in over 18 months. High School of Dundee were our rugby opponents and for hockey we welcomed Granite City Wanderers and Gordonians Hockey Club. It was great to feel the buzz around Countesswells and to see so many spectators, visiting and home, there to cheer on the teams.

Rugby

There was an excellent turnout of P6 boys, enabling us to play two full teams. The result was a win for the reds and a loss for the stripes in two very competitive games. P7 boys had an equally high turnout, the results being a loss for the stripes to a strong and well drilled Dundee team and a draw for the reds in a thrilling game.

Our S1A, S2A and S3A teams headed off on the early buses to Dundee. Some of the games were very close with plenty of excitement. Players showed good attacking skills but a few missed tackles made the difference. Losses for all 3 teams but the coaches saw plenty of positives and areas to work on going forward.

S4 drew their game after a fantastic match from both sides. RGC’s tackling was excellent throughout and our offloading game really came to the fore in the second half.

The 1st XV played some very mature and clinical rugby to win their match in front of a cheering grandstand. Although there was no score in the 2nd XV match, we saw some end to end plays and numerous try saving tackles from both teams.

Hockey

Our P5-7 boys and girls enjoyed training sessions on Saturday morning while S1-S3 and the girls 3rd XI played internal fixtures. S2A played two games winning both while S1A gave a fantastic performance in their first experience of full field 11 a side. Miss Howie saw the team create some brilliant attacking opportunities and defensive efforts.

Many people came to watch S3 v 3rd XI as some pupils were about to play in their first 11 a side game. Both teams worked very hard to eke out a chance and indeed they primarily fell to the S3s who capitalised with well worked goals slotted in with aplomb. The 3rd XI countered late on and it was a great effort from all.

The 1st XI Girls had their first run out of the season and rose to the challenge of playing a new style and system against a physical and experienced Granite City Wanderers team. The girls did a wonderful job and played an attractive and exciting brand of hockey. Confidence increased in the second half. Sadly we were caught on the counter attack in the first half and lost the game by a goal.

The 1st XI Boys excited and impressed the crowd with an electric and vibrant performance against Granite City Wanderers. Their performance and resulting win gives great excitement and potential for the season ahead.

The 2nd XI Boys found it tough going against an excellent Gordonians Men’s team but should take pride in what was the first competitive game for some of our players.

All scores can be found on our Sport Website.

Well done to all our teams and we look forward to seeing everyone back at Countesswells again next Saturday.
