Sport Update w/c 11 March 2019

Rugby

Only the 3 home fixtures against Stirling County survived an unpleasant week of weather, although the conditions proved to be very challenging at Countesswells on Saturday morning. There was a great win for the S1As which rounded off a very successful season for this team of boys who have lost just 2 matches overall. There was some great rugby played end to end in the S2A and S1B matches but both Stirling teams proved the stronger on the day.

Congratulations to S6 pupil Gregor B who played in the Scotland U18s team vs England U18s at Billingham on Sunday. Scotland played some good rugby but unfortunately lost 36-21.

Boys Hockey

The 1st XI and U15 hosted Glenalmond School mid-week with the boys playing some excellent hockey at times. The 1st XI match was close game and we were unlucky not to take a win. After taking the lead Glenalmond got back in front and a spirited 2nd half saw RGC level the game at 2-2. We came close to winning on several occasions, only to be hit on the counter-attack to go 3-2. This did not stop the boys who continued to press and attack and work for the draw. A fantastic performance, great spirit, excellent hockey and a massive step forward.

Having gone 1-0 up in a very physical U15 game, Glenalmond used their superior physical ability to out-muscle our young side. The boys played some outstanding hockey and with a little more luck on our side, could have scored more. It was a very pleasing performance from the RGC side.

On Saturday morning our 3 boys teams travelled to Gordonstoun School. There was a very good performance from our 1st XI over the whole game. They dominated for large spells and scored crucial goals in key stages of the game. The win will give all the boys confidence before next weekend’s leavers game.

The U15 match was tight and we played the better hockey. However we were outmuscled by a more physical and direct side with a sprinkling of international students who seemed to make the difference. We worked hard to finish the game well with a solid second half performance and were unlucky not to score.

There was a positive performance from the U14 side but despite playing some really good hockey for most of the game, it was a disappointing end to the season with a loss to Gordonstoun.

Netball

S1 netball played a friendly match with Portlethen Academy last Thursday. All 17 girls played in different positions with different combinations and we won convincingly. The game showed the strength and depth we have in 1st year and the girls thoroughly enjoyed the game. Thank you to S3 pupil Louisa A for umpiring.

Football

Hazlehead Academy were the opposition for the RGC S2 team in their first home match of the Division 1 season last Monday. We took the lead after a good passing move then in the 2nd half a strong Hazlehead side began to work their way back into the game, controlling the passing and creating chances to score. We fought hard though, getting bodies in the way of the opposition and preventing the ball from hitting the back of the net. The pressure was too much however, and Hazlehead eventually found the net. RGC still created chances on the counter, but could not convert. With 10 minutes to go Hazelhead broke through the stubborn def

ence and scored the winner.

It was a draw for the S1 football team against Bucksburn Academy on Wednesday with both sides having good chances, but failing to convert. RGC struggled with the wind and the taller, stronger opposition midfielders. Bucksburn controlled the long balls and pressed high to make it difficult for the RGC side to get out of their own half. We had spells in the game where we managed to pass the ball around the opposition creating a few chances, but no one was able to break the deadlock.

Cross Country

Well done to all our pupils who ran in the annual Albyn & RGC Schools Open Cross Country Championships at Balgownie playing fields on Friday. The pupils were fantastic and represented the College magnificently in extremely difficult blustery conditions. The team gold medals were won by our P5 girls, P6 boys and P7 girls teams. The P6 girls team won silver and the P7 boys team won bronze in their respective races. P7 pupil Louis won the individual silver medal in the P7 boys race. Senior School results to follow.

British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships, London

Congratulations to all our pupils who participated in this event at the weekend. Well done to P6 pupil Emma J for winning the bronze medal in the individual U11 age category, helping our under 11 girls finish 5th in the team competition.
