Sport Update w/c 20th January 2020

Rugby

It was great to have so many P6 and P7 boys keen to play rugby on Saturday morning and we took 5 teams to Edinburgh to play against Stewart’s Melville College. Our opponents were very strong which provided a fantastic learning experience for the boys. The RGC teams showed grit and determination as well as scoring some excellent tries. There was a win for P6B with good, strong running and pace. P7C drew in their match and there were losses for P7A, P7B and P6A. Well done to all players for their performances on the day and enthusiasm for the game

There was training for S1-S3 at Countesswells and no senior fixtures due to exam leave.

Girls’ Hockey

The S2 and S3 girls travelled to Mary Erskine’s School in Edinburgh on Saturday and it was a wonderful experience to play a school of this high standard of hockey. The S3As learned a huge amount and improved throughout their game which was incredibly positive. A few defensive weaknesses were evident during the first half and the girls did well to deal opponents who could shoot on their reverse sticks and play quick restarts off dead balls. After a few changes and discussions at half time, the girls created some excellent scoring chances and won a couple corners in the second half. This was a tough day at the office but a positive atmosphere on the journey home showed lots of development and learning. The S2As matched Mary Erskine’s in terms of effort but found the opponents’ off the ball movement more of a challenge. Player of the Match was Anna W and for S2B it was Jefline J. Overall the morning ended with three wins for the Edinburgh hosts but we took away many positives to work on in training.

Back at Countesswells there were matches against St Margaret’s. S1A/B mixed team drew their game, coming back from being 2-0 down at half time. After a detailed team talk involving new tactics and changing positions, the girls had a much better second half where they scored 2 fantastic goals. What a come back, well done.

Our P7Bs played the St Margaret’s P7As which included a couple of very good team members who played at a slightly quicker pace than us. St Margaret’s won the match as they were the stronger side on the day which was good practice for our goalie, Sophie, who had an excellent game.

Boys’ Hockey

The boys 1st XI welcomed Strathallan to Countesswells on Saturday. The scoreline didn’t reflect the whole game where we started really well sticking to our game plan. A few lapses in concentration caused us to concede as few goals in both halves. For large spells we played some really well structured hockey but showed some naivety at times in defence. Well done to Strathallan on their win.

Basketball

RGC won against Westhill Academy last Monday to remain undefeated in the League and qualifying for the championship game. Seth E and Alex D led the way with tough defence and timely scoring. The game was very close throughout the first half, but RGC was able to pull away with a strong third quarter.

Swimming

The finals of the Scottish Schools Swimming Championships were held at Tollcross Pool in Glasgow on Saturday. A team of 13 RGC pupils from P7-S5 travelled to this event after qualifying from the trials last November. Well done to all our swimmers who were a credit to the school. There were some excellent performances with many of the team members vastly improving their final positions from the morning’s qualifying heats. Congratulations to S2 pupil Sarah H who won 1st place in the 100m and 200m backstroke events in her age group as well as overall best 13-14yr girl in the competition.
