Rugby

On a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning at Countesswells we welcomed Stewart’s Melville College. The U16 boys narrowly lost a close fought match where they showed positive attacking intent and good line speed, while the S2As won their match. S2 coach Mr Gill reported that their tackling was much improved and all players worked hard in defence. The other home match saw the P6 teams finish with a draw and loss. Coach Mr Horne was pleased to see the boys showing continuous development throughout and an ability to move the ball into space and tackle low. The 1st XV, S3A, both S1 and both P7 teams travelled to Stewart’s Melville in Edinburgh where there were wins for S1A and S1B. Mr Anderson was delighted with both S1 teams’ performances, reporting that they had ‘cracking games where they ran well and worked hard with a determined defence’.

On Wednesday the P7 boys enjoyed a trip to Edinburgh to play in the Stewart’s Melville Rugby 10s tournament against 5 other schools from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dollar. The boys tackled bravely to keep one of their matches quite close while in another they built up a few phases to put pressure on the opposition. Despite a narrow loss overall, the boys had a great day and enjoyed the tournament experience.

Girls Hockey

Congratulations to both the 1st XI and S3A girls hockey teams who won their respective North District Tournaments on Saturday morning against Albyn, St Margaret’s and Aberdeen Grammar School. 1st XI coach Mr Scorgie commented that after really finding form in the last 2 games, the girls ran out comfortable winners against Albyn and St Margaret’s respectively. He said the girls were obviously delighted in winning but winning playing some lovely hockey. Meanwhile S3A coach Mrs Fraser was pleased to see her team playing well together and working hard for each other. Their goal keeper didn’t touch the ball all morning which was credit to the defence of the outfield players. The S1B/C team played against St Margaret’s and for some of the girls it was their first competitive match against another school. Despite not winning, Miss Stephen was delighted to see the team became stronger as the game went on, working very hard in defence. There was also a win for the P7 team against St Margaret’s.

Last Monday the S3A team travelled to George Watson’s College for their Bowl Semi Final. Mrs Fraser reported that the girls’ attacking possession and second half dominance unfortunately came unrewarded and Watson’s punished us with a further 2 breakaway goals in the last 5 minutes and eventual win. This was however a performance of which the girls can be very proud.

Boys Hockey

All 3 boys hockey teams faced tough opposition from Fettes College on Saturday morning. Mr Harper reported that after a close first half for the 1st XI with some great defensive play, Fettes broke away in the second half due to a larger more physically able squad. The goalkeeper was the standout player for RGC in a game that was much closer than the score line suggested. RGC were unlucky not to get a goal with some strong midfield breaks and excellent enthusiasm from our players.

U15 coach Mr Stuart commented that the boys represented the school incredibly well on Saturday. The first half saw a very competitive game with RGC controlling large parts of the play and creating some excellent goal scoring opportunities. However the opposition were an older, stronger and more experienced team and the boys succumbed to a number of deflected goals. Overall this game showed further improvement and development in what has been a positive year for this age group.

The U14 boys came up against a strong Fettes side, the bulk of whom are playing in the Under 15 Cup Final. Coach Mr Filer reported that to their credit everyone kept going but the defence was repeatedly stretched by probably the best all round team we have played all season.

Netball

There was a fantastic end to the playing season on Saturday for our Senior A girls who won the Scottish Independent Schools Tournament at Strathallan School. Mrs Axten’s squad was determined to build on their previous success earlier this season as the Aberdeen Secondary Schools Tournament Champions. Nevertheless they knew it would be a very competitive tournament. Channeling a year’s worth of hard work and training was their aim for the day and the girls did not disappoint, winning all their matches. Mrs Axten said she was so proud of what the girls have achieved as this was one of their biggest netball season aims this year.

The Senior B netball team travelled to St George’s School in Edinburgh on Wednesday to compete in their Cup Quarter Final. Mrs Axten commented that it was such an evenly matched and very competitive game and despite a defeat, the team showed huge potential moving forward into Malta Tour Preparations next season.

Tennis

The Senior Boys team enjoyed an afternoon of tennis against George Watson’s College in the Scottish Schools Cup on Tuesday, winning all their singles and doubles matches.

Football

Our S1 and S2 football teams were up against Cults Academy this week. This was the first match the S2s had played since they were put out of the School’s Cup on penalties by the same opposition back in December. This time RGC took the lead early in the game and maintained this throughout, winning comfortably. Mr Kirkwood reported that this Cults side are a very good team and our win puts us up there with the best sides in Aberdeen at the moment.

There was further good news for the S1 team who scored 2 goals in the first 10 minutes, adding a third not long after. It was a dominant performance, in which each player shone in their respective positions.

Basketball

The S3-S6 basketball team won their city league match against Aberdeen Grammar on Monday by an impressive score of 61-31 to improve to 6 wins and no losses in league play. After a close first quarter RGC ramped up the defensive pressure and pulled away by half time. In the second half RGC managed to maintain control of the game with significant contributions from the entire team.
