Sport Update w/c 30 September 2019

Rugby

On Tuesday after school Mr Anderson and Mr Currie took a P6 and P7 team down to Lathallan School for a set of friendly matches. This was a very positive experience for all of our boys and a welcome chance to play given there were no Junior School matches on Saturday morning.

Fettes College made the trip north to play our 1st XV, S2A and B teams on Saturday afternoon while S3A along with U16A and B travelled south to Edinburgh. Well done to the U16B/U15B mixed team who won their match. The boys gave a really spirited performance in tricky conditions and our forwards all played well. Harvey S was named ‘Man of the Match’ with 3 tries and 3 conversions. Fettes proved to be very strong opposition for our other teams and in the face of this S3A coach Mr Beattie reported that his team played some ‘cracking rugby’ with our defensive line putting a lot of pressure on the Fettes attack. In the S2A match there was only one try between the teams until the last 15 minutes, when Fettes then went ahead. S2B also played a very tight match with both teams neck and neck until the final furlong. Daniel R was named ‘Man of the Match’ with some intelligent ruck steals. There was also a loss for the 1st XV against a confident and accurate Fettes team.

Girls’ and Boys’ Hockey

There was no Saturday hockey this weekend for girls or boys due to the Open Morning taking place.

Netball

It has been a very busy week for RGC netball. On Wednesday the 3rd VII started their season with a win in a competitive Aberdeen League match against Bucksburn Academy. This was an opportunity for the team to trial a combination of all 10 players on the court and change up the shooting circle combinations. Captain Gemma G was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ and in her post-match report she commented, “Our defence played very well clearing the ball and our attackers complimented this with scoring many goals. Before the match, we were all feeling the nerves as we hadn’t played as a team before but we all pulled through and all focused on working together. Speaking for the team, I can say that we look forward to playing our game next week against Albyn and hopefully winning another.”

There were 3 fixtures on Thursday, the first of which was a Scottish Cup match for the 2nd VII against Mackie Academy. This was a tough starting fixture for the team, ending in a loss for RGC, but the girls rose to the challenge with the first quarter finishing 6-6. It was a very physical game with lots of possession for both squads meaning their fitness was really challenged. The girls’ defensive circle was excellent and forced errors for the opposition. ‘Player of the Match’ was Rebecca H who commented in her post-match report, “Mackie Academy was a very experienced and physical team. This made the match challenging but all of our players adapted and strengthened from this. Everyone gave 100% and played really well. Although we lost, Frayla, our Captain, kept positivity running throughout the entire game and we are all excited to build on this for the rest of the season.”

Also on Thursday the 1st VII played their second Aberdeen League match of the season with a win against Aberdeen Grammar School. The team’s focus was to release the ball instinctively and without hesitation as well as to vary the tempo of the game. The girls worked hard and challenged themselves to achieve these goals. Errors crept in at times, but it didn’t stop the team from focusing on these goals and correcting faults resulting in an excellent win. ‘Player of the Match’ went to captain Piper K who was consistently tight on her player and physical in defence. Piper won lots of ball body on body and in the air and really gave confidence to the whole team.

The Junior squad also played Aberdeen Grammar on Thursday which ended in a loss for RGC. Heads went down after losing the first quarter, but the girls managed to pick themselves up and become more determined with an increase in change of pace to match that of the Aberdeen Grammar girls, and RGC went on to win the last quarter. ‘Player of the Match’ went to Emily who never lost focus and determination to intercept a pass or interrupt the passage play into the opponent’s shooting circle. We look forward to meeting Grammar again in another fixture next week.

Golf

On Wednesday Mr Scorgie took a team of 13 S2-S5 pupils down to St Andrews for the St Leonard’s School Tom Morris Championship.
