Sport Update w/c 4 March 2019

Rugby

The S1 boys had a fantastic time last Friday and Saturday on their rugby tour to Glasgow. Their first stop was Scotstoun Stadium, home of Glasgow Warriors, where they were met by former pupil and current Glasgow Warriors player, Ruaridh Jackson. Ruaridh left RGC in 2006 and since then has played 150 times for Glasgow Warriors, as well as for Wasps and Harlequins. He has 33 caps for Scotland. Ruaridh took the boys on a guided tour of the stadium after which they enjoyed a run around on the pitch. We are very grateful to Ruaridh for the time he spent with us. The boys then travelled on to Glasgow High School and St Columba’s School, Kilmacolm where they were hosted by the families of the boys against whom they were playing their matches. On Saturday morning the boys in Glasgow played in a triangular tournament against High School of Glasgow and Hutcheson’s Grammar School where RGC secured wins in both matches. The boys in Kilmacolm played against St Columba’s and The Queen Victoria School, Dunblane. The trip was a huge success with many friendships and memories being made.

The only other rugby fixture at the weekend was the 1st XV vs Deeside / Garioch Rugby Club hosted at Countesswells. This was an exciting game with 5 tries a piece and RGC winning by 2 points.

Girls Hockey

We had a very successful morning of hockey on Saturday against George Watson’s School for our last full set of fixtures this term. Of the 4 matches, we secured 3 wins and a draw which is a huge improvement on the score lines from when we last played Watson’s in November. S3A coach Mrs Fraser said it was definitely a case of ‘save the best till last’ as the girls played some of their best hockey all season. The S1A girls fought to the final whistle and were winning with 2 minutes to go until a Watson’s short corner clinched them the equalizer. It was an exciting game and Miss Stephen was so proud of the girls.

The P7 team enjoyed a trip to Peffermill in Edinburgh for the annual Watson’s tournament where they played against several other schools.

Earlier in the week the 1st XI played in their Scottish Schools Plate semi final against Hutcheson’s Grammar School. Despite not winning, the RGC girls dominated for large parts of the match on what was a very wet and windy afternoon at Countesswells.

Netball

S1 enjoyed a great morning of netball on Sunday against the Shetland U13 District side who were touring the North East. The Shetland girls were a very strong side and as this was a friendly match, everyone was happy to join forces and mix up the teams for a bit of fun. The girls all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Skiing

On Tuesday the Senior Ski Team travelled to Braehead Snow Factor for the Scottish Secondary Schools Snowsport Association Green Mountain Race. We had 19 competitors representing RGC and Mrs Melville was very pleased to report that our RGC A Team won 2nd place overall in the Open S1 to S6 Team category. Additionally, S3 pupil Milly A was 2nd overall in the individual female S1 to S3 category.

Tennis

The Senior Girls team played an afternoon of tennis against High School of Dundee in the Scottish Schools Cup on Thursday. Dundee proved to be the stronger team on the day and we wish them luck in the next round.

Football

S2 football travelled to Portlethen for their match on Tuesday. RGC started the scoring in the first couple of minutes, but it was Portlethen who got the better of the two sides early on, scoring 3 to answer Gordon's 1. Gordon's fought their way back into the match and managed to get the score back to 3-3; however the first half wasn't finished there and Portlethen managed to get another before the break to go 4-3 up. The second half was much and such the same, both Portlethen and Gordon's adding to their tally to make the score 5-4 to the home side. Just as Gordon's were looking at getting back into the game, a looping shot was cleared off the line by a Gordon's defender, only to be given as a goal by the referee. With the score now at 6-4 and the team with no more substitutions to make, Portlethen took advantage and scored again to end the game at 7-4.
