Sport Update: w/c 7 January 2019

Rugby

We welcomed two local teams, Mackie RFC and Ellon RFC to Countesswells on Saturday for our first week back after the festive period. S2 coach Mr Gill praised his team’s win, saying they played with energy and enthusiasm and put together a very complete performance. The S1Bs secured a win over Mackie with the last play of the game. Coach Mr Donald reported they had a slow start, but as the rust after the holidays wore off, the boys finished the 2nd half tackling, rucking and with more depth and width. The S1A team played a good, close game against Ellon with the visitors winning by a try.

Girls Hockey

Our 1st XI hockey girls travelled to Perth early on Saturday morning to play in the Scottish Hockey Indoor Finals. Their first match ended in defeat to George Heriot’s School but the girls picked themselves up, winning their next match against Galashiels Academy and sealing a place in the semi final against George Watson’s College. This game was only decided in the last 50 seconds with a Watson’s winner. The bronze medal play off ended in a a penalty shootout to George Heriot’s with RGC taking 4th place overall. Mr Scorgie was delighted with the girls’ performance and said they should be pleased with their effort and standard of play. The 2nd XI and S3A teams played against Mary Erskine’s School but despite some promising performances, both teams were feeling the effects of players missing and lost their matches. It was a better news for S2A, S1A and P7A teams who all won their matches at home to Albyn School. For the S1A team it was their first 11-a-side match and a great debut for some of the girls who had moved up from the B team.

Boys Hockey

Saturday’s trip to Strathallan School provided a tough set of matches for the boys 1st XI, U15 and U14 teams. Despite RGC producing some good hockey, the hosts proved the stronger, more physical side.

Netball

There was a very encouraging start to the year for Senior A and B netball on Thursday with both teams winning their Senior League fixtures against Albyn School.
