RGC Sport Update 9 Jan 2022

It was great to see Countesswells as a hive of activity again this week as pupils returned from the Christmas holidays. S2 and S4 Sport resumed on Thursday and Friday along with our rugby and hockey co-curricular clubs. The remaining co-curricular sports clubs will resume from Monday 10 January.

We are pleased to confirm that spectators are still very much welcome at Countesswells. The RGCPA are on site as usual on Saturday mornings along with staff from Inspire Catering to provide spectators with their usual Saturday morning hot drink and bacon roll.

Rugby

We were delighted to have 3 fixtures away against Ellon on Saturday morning with the buses, for once, being able to leave after sunrise. S3 took an impressive 29 man squad with all players having some time on the pitch which was an excellent achievement. Some missed tackles let Ellon into the game and the RGC boys struggled to tidy up some scrappy play around the breakdowns. Overall it was a win for the hosts but a great opportunity for our boys to get back into competitive sport after the break.

The S4 rugby team blew off the Christmas cobwebs with a strong performance against a tough Ellon team to score 6 tries. Some of the support play and offloading were in Mr McKay’s words, "top drawer", despite the cold. Defensively the boys continued to be robust with numerous chop tackles to the fore. Previously we had been caught out in the wide channels but there was a big improvement there. All in all this was a good run out and win for RGC.

In the senior boys match, S6 won the first half by running in some excellent rugby. In the second half, the S5 boys took to the pitch to win using a more direct strategy.

For the rest of the year groups from P6 upwards, rugby training sessions were held at Countesswells.

Hockey

All year groups from P5 upwards enjoyed hockey training sessions at Countesswells on Saturday morning as there were no fixtures.
