Sport Update: Week Ending 6 November

Girls Football

This week saw the start of a new co-curricular club, S1-S3 Girls Football. Mrs West from the Maths Department is leading this new group and along with Mrs Rutherford from the Computing Department they hosted their first session at Countesswells after school on Monday. This is a fun session for girls who may be new to football or anyone who has previous experience playing outside the school.

Girls Hockey

It was not to be for our Junior Girls Hockey team who travelled down to the Borders on Monday to play Kelso High School in the quarter final of the National Plate competition. A breakaway goal allowed Kelso to take the lead late into the first half, but a much better second half led to some good chances for us that just went wide and a few penalty corners won that we couldn’t unfortunately convert. Kelso sealed their 2-0 victory with a long ball through that led to a 1v1 on the goalie. There were some good performances from the RGC girls who didn’t stop working all game.

On Wednesday there was a second trip for RGC Hockey to the Borders, this time it was the turn of the Girls 1st XI who made the journey down to Peebles High School for Round 1 of the Challenge Cup. In very tricky conditions, after no hockey for two weeks of the half-term break, the girls started strongly, going 1-0 up through Anna W. The second half started slowly with the home side coming back into the game to level at 1-1. RGC could have sealed victory in the last 5 minutes with a few good chances created, but by this time the cold and wet conditions had made things very difficult. It was then onto penalties where RGC scored 3, with goalie Sophie P saving 3 out of 5 and securing a win for RGC 3-2 after penalties.

We welcomed Ashley Road School to Countesswells for some friendly matches with our Junior School players on Saturday morning. There were no other fixtures but a great chance for our teams to get in some extra practice sessions

Netball

Thursday evening saw the S2/3B team win 27-3 against Dyce Academy in the Aberdeen League. For four of the girls it was their first ever time representing RGC! The girls performed very well, working hard and learning all about playing the different positions and what is required of them. Players of the Match went to Niamh and Destiny who fought for every ball and for creating lovely passing options.

Another very successful Saturday morning Netball session was held under the stand at Countesswells. It’s great to see this practice time growing in numbers.

Rugby

Rugby fixtures on Saturday morning were against Loretto School from Musselburgh with a mixed bag of results. S2A won in what was a really enjoyable game of end to end rugby. The conditions meant it was a very stop/start and we started very slowly. However as the match progressed RGC improved, especially in the 2nd half. The boys showed excellent courage in the last 10 minutes. Well done to Player of the Match, Jimi O, who scored two tries on his debut for the team!

S3 lost to a physically imposing Loretto team, however RGC met fire with fire throughout the game and scored a couple of excellent tries. The boys showed impressive pressure in defence and really improved in their contact skills. There were just a couple of moments where the team let themselves slip and Loretto took advantage of these small margins to score. The boys will be frustrated but should also be excited with all the good rugby they played.

The U16s came out of the blocks absolutely electric and didn’t drop the levels for 70 minutes. Good game shape, hard aggressive carrying and relentless defence ensured a very clinical and dominant win. Coach Mr Riddle commented that overall this was a class effort from the boys and the best they’ve. played all season.

The 1st XV suffered a heavy defeat to a physical and clinical Loretto. The boys dug in but we’re outclassed at the breakdown.

Team of the Week

Well done to 1st XI Girls Hockey who are this week’s TOTW after their hard fought win on penalties in very tricky conditions down at Peebles High. They are looking forward to the next round against Selkirk High School.

TOTW Week ending 16th October

Our TOTW for the week before half term was the S1A rugby team who beat George Heriot’s (having previously lost to them) in a brilliant end-to-end game, finishing 49-47! The difference between the teams was the fact that we converted all our 7 tries and the opposition missed one. Coach Mr Bucley said it was a great match to watch and coach on a sunny day at Goldenacre.

Sport Achievements from outside school

Congratulations to S6 pupil and 1st XV player Ross B who represented Glasgow Warriors U19s against Edinburgh Rugby on Tuesday. It was great to see him playing alongside Class of ‘22 FPs Patrick Rogerson and Andrew McLean.

Well done to Zara P (S3) & Lexie L(S2) who represented the winning Aberdeen District u15 Netball side against Angus. Zara picked up Player of the Match for her speed in WA  while Lexie showed great strength in GD winning many interceptions.

It’s great to see such strong RGC representation at the Scottish Hockey BRAVE academies this year. We have lots of Emerging & Aspiring players across our senior year groups making their way up the performance sport ladder.
