Basketball

It was a busy week for Senior Basketball who were in League action on Monday followed by Cup action on Wednesday. It was a great start to their week on Monday with a win over Cults Academy to improve to 3-0 in league play and 6-0 overall. We got off to a fast start led by leading scorer David A to build a big lead at halftime. Cults played really tough in the second half but we were able to hold on for the victory.

On Wednesday the team made the journey over to Inverness to play in two matches in the Scottish Cup. After winning against Glenalmond, it was a tougher test against Millburn in the quarter final. The match could have been much closer but Millburn started the game on a 17-2 run and from there we played it pretty even until the end. However it was too big a gap and Millburn were too good of a team for us to come back.

It has been a very successful season for the RGC team to get this far and they are unbeaten in League and hoping to finish strong. Their next League match is against Mackie Academy on Tuesday.

Football

The Senior Football team’s winning streak came to an end on Thursday in their match against Jordanhill School in the semi final of the Scottish Independent Schools League Cup. Jordanhill were the sharper of the two sides in the first half and were deservedly up by three goals to two at the break. The boys fought really well in the second half and can hold their heads up high with the efforts they put in. Despite this, it was Jordanhill who managed to score the crucial next goal from a corner in the second half. Two more goals at the end of the game ensured the victory for the opposition. This was a tough one to take for the lads, but they will fight on in the Scottish Cup next week against Perth High School.

Netball

It was a busy afternoon of Netball at the Beach Leisure Centre on Thursday with our S3A & S3B teams playing their League matches against Albyn and the S1s competing in their ASSNA Tournament.

S3A comfortably won their match and it was a good opportunity for coach Miss Stephen to move the girls about in different positions. Player of the Match was Zara P. S3B had a tough match against a physical Albyn B in the League. The girls showed some really lovely passages of play and really listened to advice given by Miss Duddy and Miss Ellis. Miss Duddy said the girls couldn’t have worked any harder and the game was much closer than the score reflected. Chinenye was voted Player of the Match for her fantastic interceptions along with Grace J who worked tirelessly in C and did a fantastic job at leading the team on court.

The S1 Aberdeen Schools Tournament was a great opportunity for our RGC Gold & Navy teams to get some playing experience against other local schools. There were some brilliant passages of play and excellent shooting. Mrs Fraser was delighted to see 22 RGC players taking to the court! Well done to Miss Murray, our University of Edinburgh PE Placement Student, who hosted the tournament and did a brilliant job!

Girls Hockey

The S6 Hockey girls had a fantastic mini tour to Edinburgh at the weekend, led by Miss Howie and Mrs Roberts. The girls spent two nights in the capital, where unfortunately, their Saturday match against George Heriot’s was cancelled due to the frost/snow. They had a great climb up Arthur’s Seat instead on a very cold but beautiful sunny day. On Sunday they played against the Edinburgh University 5s team. This was a great weekend for all the girls, who haven't played together as a group since S3, when Miss Howie was their coach. They also amassed more than 30,000 steps over the course of the weekend and experienced the Megabus!

Countesswells on Saturday

Sadly due to the snow and continued ice cover through the week, all Saturday hockey and rugby fixtures were cancelled along with the second of our P1-P4 Multi Sports sessions. Our P5-P7 Netball group were happy to continue on inside and had a great turnout with plenty of opportunity for skills practice and match play.

Team of the Week

Our Team of the Week this week are the S6 Girls Hockey team who travelled to Edinburgh at the weekend for the mini tour. This was a fantastic way to mark their time playing hockey at RGC as their last school season nears its completion.

Sporting Achievements from Outside School

Well done to all our pupils who represented their swimming clubs at the weekend at the Edinburgh International Swimming Event. Well done to Ben Mc (S5), who swims for Garioch Amateur Swimming Club, for his excellent 3rd place medal in the Junior Boys 1500m Freestyle.
