Sport Update: Week ending 15 January

Netball

On Saturday morning we had a great turnout of pupils to our Netball sessions. There was lots of match play during our Primary session. At half time the green team identified their shooting accuracy needed to improve so we focused on a 10 minute shooting workshop with Mrs Axten. The yellow team identified they weren’t successfully linking passes to their goal third so Miss Duddy delivered a 10 minute workshop on attacking drives. This really helped improve our team performance in the third and fourth quarters. The S1-6 session was well attended with some girls coming straight from their hockey training to join in. Miss Stephen and Miss Duddy led the group who started with some drills then moved on to match play.

Hockey

Following on from co-curricular hockey starting back this week, we had a full complement of training on Saturday morning. This gave our teams the chance to get back on the pitch after the holidays and practise their skills ahead of the fixtures this term.

Rugby

There was training this week and on Saturday morning for our teams, along with the first of the Caledonian Cup fixtures for the U16s and U18s against Orkney RFC. The U16 team won in a dominant fashion against a gritty Orkney side who never gave up. RGC kicked off, turned our opponents over and scored in the first minute and that set the tone for the rest of the game. Aggressive but calculated defence and a ruthlessness when it came to converting opportunities ensured this was a one sided victory and a good start to the Caley Cup.

The 1st XV won against a largely inexperienced but committed Orkney team in a sun soaked morning at Countesswells. Orkney honoured the fixture with 13 players and no specialist front row players, a true representation of a rugby club holding true to the values of the sport. Despite the score line, 25+ players got to enjoy the great game, and we thank Orkney for honouring this Cup fixture in challenging times.

Sporting Achievements Outside School

Congratulations to Autumn T (S4), Michael M (S4) and Louisa M (S2) who have been selected for the GB Snowsport U16 & U14 British Children’s Ski Team 22/23. This is a fantastic achievement resulting from their hard work skiing against tough competition in Europe during the Christmas holidays. It is great to see very strong RGC representation in these national squads. Good luck to each pupil and their team for the season ahead.
