We have 3 Senior teams competing in the ASSNA (Aberdeen Secondary Schools Netball Association) Cup and Shield Leagues this year. We are the only school in Aberdeen with three competitive Senior teams playing in the ASSNA Leagues. The Shield league is made up of 1st VII and 2nd VII squads from across Aberdeen City and Shire schools and we are the only 3rd VII squad.
We had a fantastic start to the Netball season at the Beach Leisure Centre on Tuesday afternoon with both our 2nd and 3rd VII teams playing against Albyn School in the ASSNA League. The 2nd VII won against Albyn 1st VII while the 3rd VII drew their match against Albyn 2nd VII. Coach Mrs Axten was delighted with these two excellent results which will inspire and motivate the girls for the season ahead. The atmosphere at the Beach LC was fantastic as both teams were cheering each other on from the side lines during two very close and competitive games.
Here are our captains’ match reports:
2nd VII Captain Sophie F:
“Albyn’s 1st VII were very tough competition for the first game of the season. In the first quarter, as it was our first ever time playing as a team, we were still learning how to work together. We came off three goals down after the first quarter but we weren’t going to let this stop us. We went into the second quarter even more determined than the first. By the end of the second quarter there was a one goal difference. As a team we played some excellent Netball to take the win 17 goals to 15. Well done to everyone on the team, we all played amazingly and I’m very excited to see what the Netball season has in store for us.”
3rd VII Captain Georgia P:
“Let me just start by saying how incredibly proud I am of all of our girls, they all played brilliantly and put in their absolute best efforts until the very end. Although it was our first time playing together as an official team, I strongly believe that we communicated and worked together excellently, as shown from our well deserved tie against Albyn’s 2nd VII team. From being able to observe the match as a GK at the end of the court, I can very confidently say that the match was very balanced in both effort, skill, and above all, spirit. Therefore making this a very tough first match to have had, nevertheless, we pulled through as a team and came off the court as shared champions. I look forward to playing the many more matches we have to come alongside my new team. Thank you once again to Krystal, Cissy, Mhairi, Chi, Morven, Darcy and Doro for putting in your best efforts and helping to make our first match together a great one!”
3rd VII Vice-Captain Mhairi E:
“Despite it being the first match of the season, and our first match together as a team, the 3rd VII played exceptionally well against Albyn’s 2nd team, which resulted in a 17-17 draw. It was a fast paced game with both excellent attacking and defending on display, especially from team captain Georgia, who was deemed Player of the Match by the opposing team. Well done girls!”
On Wednesday several pupils represented RGC at the SSSA Dual Slalom Qualifier Event held at Aberdeen Snowsports Centre, Garthdee. Our RGC Junior School School ‘A’ Team finished in 3rd place.
