Rugby

Countesswells was a hive of activity on Saturday morning as we hosted home fixtures against Deeside RFC, Lathallan School and Ellon Rugby. The 1st XV recorded an excellent victory in a well fought game against Deeside which was full of fierce contact and some excellent tries. There was a narrow win for U16A by 1 point in a close game against Deeside where we held most of the possession. However lack of accuracy at time cost us some scoring chances so we will focus on this in our next training session. S3A played a triangular against Deeside and Lathallan and won their first 30 minute game against Deeside. The boys attacked very well and used the width of the pitch to exploit gaps out wide. Coach Mr Beattie was pleased to see the boys playing some of their best rugby of the season. Lathallan proved to be the stronger side in the second match and the RGC team struggled to come back after a break.

S2A secured a convincing win against Deeside. Ross T scored a hat trick of tries, showing a real appreciation of angles of running to exploit gaps in the defence. The boys’ defence was solid throughout and they were able to limit Deeside to one try. The S2B won their match against Lathallan where attacking agility dominated the game. This was a strong performance from the B squad who showed grit and determination to come back from 3 tries down. Effective defensive pressure in the last 15 minutes allowed them to capitalise on the opposition’s errors and a try in the closing seconds of the game sealed the win. 

S1A won against Deeside in a very competitive and well fought game. The boys kept their own ball well and moved it wide as often as possible. 

The P6 and P7 teams enjoyed matches against Ellon Rugby with P7 winning their three games and ruck turnovers proving to be their strength. P6 lost in their matches and will work on improving their support play to give an offload option in contact as well as learning to change their point of attack instead of relying on the biggest ball carriers.

Overall it was a very successful morning of rugby which, along with the accompanying girls hockey matches against local teams, made for an excellent atmosphere around Countesswells. 

Girls’ Hockey

S3A girls came out as winners of their triangular tournament against Aberdeen Grammar and Albyn at Rubislaw on Saturday morning. They played some of their best hockey of the season winning several corners and demonstrating some lovely passing connections. Player of the Match was Daisy with some great skill on attack. Miss Howie was very happy with the girls’ performances. 

A mix of 1st and 2nd XI teams drew their match against Albyn at Countesswells. It was good for the girls to get back on the pitch as they have had a break from training recently due to study leave. Many of the girls were played in different positions and it was good to see they adapted to the challenge. Player of the Match was Christie in goal.
 
S2A recorded an excellent win against Albyn with all 4 goals coming in the first half. The energy levels dropped a bit in the 2nd half, allowing Albyn some opportunities which luckily were not converted to goals. The passing and switching the play was better today and it was a clean sheet for Sophie in goals.
 
A team of S1A/B girls played some excellent hockey on Saturday morning, winning against the RGC S2B team. There was a huge improvement from last week’s match with the girls showing an excellent work rate and thinking carefully about their passing. 

Boys’ Hockey

A strong performance from George Watson’s College marked the end of the Scottish Plate competition for our U15 boys hockey through the week. Well done to the team for getting as far as the quarter finals and we wish George Watson’s good luck in the semi final. 
 
We hosted Gordonstoun at Countesswells on Thursday afternoon against our U15 and U14 teams. There was a loss for U15s and an excellent win for the U14s. 
 
On Saturday the 1st XI and U14s travelled to St Andrews to play against St Leonard’s School. Our U14s drew their match and played some very nice hockey, taking away many positives from the match. The seniors were 1-0 down by half time but played some excellent hockey in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half to equal the scores. We had some 2nd year pupils in our team whilst all of the opposition was in S6 and we ran out of steam a little, struggling to maintain the physicality. St Leonard’s scored twice in the last 3 minutes and took home the win. 

Netball

Our P6 and P7 girls enjoyed a friendly tournament with Albyn and Gordonstoun on Saturday morning. No scores were kept but there were lots of opportunities for the players to receive some coaching and play against great opposition. Mrs Webb and Mr Mills arrived to show the girls their support too.

Cross Country

The P3 Fun Run and P4-S3 Cross Country Championships were held during Games time throughout the week. Well done to everyone who ran the course and to the pupils who finished in the top 3 positions. All results can be viewed on SOCS. 

Team of the Week

Well done to the S3A girls hockey team who put together a great set of performances and results in their triangular tournament with Aberdeen Grammar and Albyn on Saturday. 

Sports News from outwith School

Well done to S4 pupil Ailsa and S5 pupils Zoe, Eilidh and Connie who were part of the North District U18 Indoor Hockey team finishing as runners up in Saturday’s Inter-District tournament in Perth.

Well done to S5 pupils Stevan and Matthew who were selected to represent Scotland Saltires U18 Boys Water Polo team who competed at the Inter-Regions Championships in Sheffield at the weekend.
