Cricket
A young and talented S1/S2 team took on Albyn School at Countesswells on Tuesday afternoon in what turned out to be cold but quite nice conditions. We batted first and made 105 for the loss of 4 wickets. Good batting from Aarav, Aayush and Eli. Our bowling and fielding started and finished well taking 10 Albyn wickets. Good work from Nicol, Riyansh and Aleks. Some quality fielding included three catches from Riyansh. Albyn were all out for 76. Well done captain Aarav.
The U15 cricket team travelled south to Loretto on Thursday in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup, giving a very mature and professional display to comfortably win the match. Teamwork, camaraderie and positive mental attitude were evident from as early as the warm up, where the boys worked extremely hard to prepare themselves for the match with fitness and fielding drills. Captain Tanish K won the toss, and was able to execute the team’s game plan with a superb performance in the field. Wickets for Alex M, Aayan H, Aarav N, Riyansh K, Rudra C and Rohith S along with some good fielding restricted Loretto to 99-8 off 20 overs. When the chase began, RGC got off to a flying start with Aayan, Tanish and Riyansh scoring heavily through some sublime shot making and some aggressive running. Rudra and Aayush S saw the team home, with a sweetly timed boundary taking the boys over the line with more than 9 overs to spare - all with a soundtrack provided by the Loretto wicket keeper’s very good-natured sledging! The boys eagerly await the quarter finals, and have no reason to fear any opponent based on today’s performance.
Rugby
Mr McKay and Mrs Molyneux were delighted with the turnout at the Co-curricular Girls Rugby sessions for both P6-7 and S1-3 during the week where the focus was on fun, tackling technique and ball handling skills through games. The skill progression, game understanding and effort the players have shown so far has been fantastic! We hope that the number of pupils attending will grow as the term progresses as there is real enthusiasm for girls rugby across the school.
Netball
What an exciting day for the S1A team, a day they have been waiting a long time for! They had a super run in the Scottish Cup where they progressed through to the plate final. Finals day took place at Edinburgh University and what an experience it was! The team faced North Berwick High School and even though there was a large crowd and was in a big venue, this did not distract our girls from the task in hand. The game started well, where after the 1st quarter RGC were only 2 goals behind North Berwick (5-3) and then at half time, North Berwick were only up by 4 goals. It was not to be for RGC with North Berwick pulling away in the 3rd quarter, however what a performance from all 9 girls in the S1A team. We are so proud of them and a huge well done getting to this stage - just fantastic! Player of the Match went to Ines D K for her outstanding interceptions and fight right through to the final whistle.
Golf
Aberdeen Schools Golf League resumed last Thursday with the team of Finlay B, Diego O-V, Sam M and Robert W taking on Lochside Academy at the Kings Links. On an evening where the only people on the course were 8 intrepid golfers, 3 parents and coach Mr Scorgie, 2 Polar bears were seen heading to the Inversnecky to get warmed up due to the steady drizzle, the bracing wind and a temperature hovering around freezing. Not to be deterred, the Golf was of a high quality from both teams and as the game drew to its conclusion RGC were able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory losing 2 matches on the last hole and the other by a 2&1 margin- such are the vagaries of match play where many times we have been the beneficiaries of good fortune.
Tennis
Friday was the best day of the week for weather where it was just cold and overcast. The U14 boys Tennis team took on the might of visitors George Heriots. The team of Kevin S, Oran M, Rory S and James L dug really deep in their singles to make sure the tie was still level going into the doubles. Rory and James won comfortably in their doubles while Kevin and Oran went to the wire in a tense final set tie break. They prevailed in a cracking match which saw high quality Tennis from both sides.
Saturday morning at Countesswells saw the pool stages of the official ‘Road to Wimbledon’ singles tournament. The courts were packed with players ready to test themselves against the rest of the opponents in their group. In the boys section the matches were played in a tie break to ten format and there were many matches which went to the sudden death point at nine all. Strong performances were seen from Alex D (P7), Kevin S (S2) and Robert W (S3) who all came first in their groups. In the girls section there was a fantastic performance from Annabel A (P5) who won every match, and from Caitlin B (P7) and Saso A (S2).
On May 13th the knockout stages of the singles tournament will start at Countesswells at 8am for the boys, and 8.30am for the girls. Good luck to all our finalists.
Athletics
For our first match of the season on Saturday morning we took a trip to Strathallan for a 3-way match against Merchiston and the hosts under captain Kene I who was a great help in getting the team prepared. There were lots of strong performances from Tammy O, Anneke N, Fraser M and Finlay R who all won their respective races. Special well done to Fraser who also beat the boys in the age group above, over 1500m. This event was a real team effort with some pupils stepping up to race 3 or 4 times. Well done to all who took part. Our next fixtures are the S1-3 Albyn Match in Milltimber on Tuesday 9th followed by a trip to High School of Dundee for a S1-3 match versus the hosts and Edinburgh Academy on Saturday 13th May.
P1-P4 Multi-Sports
Following on from the success of the taster sessions last term, our programme of P1-P4 Multi-Sport sessions returned on Saturday for the younger pupils of RGC. We had a great group of enthusiastic athletes out on the water pitch where the focus was on activities related to our summer term sports. We look forward to running the next session on Saturday 13th May.
