Netball

On Thursday the S3 netball team played in a friendly against our 3rd VII after school. This was a great match with S3 showing excellent resilience and confidence against an older team. Mrs Hardie loved seeing the girls in action as these players will be seniors next year and there are so many talented players.

The 2nd VII gave a solid performance in their Scottish Cup win against Albyn B, also on Thursday. Albyn awarded Adeola O player of the match for her high percentage shooting in the circle. Well done girls!

Rugby

Our P6 and P7 rugby teams both enjoyed wins in their first away trips of the year on Saturday, travelling to Morrison’s Academy in Crieff. P6 demonstrated lots of positives in their attack and defense with Mr Hall commenting that the attitude of our players was ‘outstanding’. The 21 P7 boys played with attacking intent and scored numerous tries. With big numbers, we were able to lend players to Morrison’s to enable a successful round robin tournament, showing sportsmanship throughout. 

S1 put in their best performance of the season in their home match against Morrison’s, with strong go forward, rucking and ball presentation. They also dominated the tackle areas and were excellent at counter rucking. The RGC player we lent to Morrison’s scored a try for them so it was a good day at the office for all concerned. Meanwhile for S2 it was a game of two halves. RGC showed some real grit in the second half to come back into the game but poorly organised defence and panic on the ball in the first half cost them the match.

Mr Beattie was delighted with his S3A win against Ellon RFC at Countesswells, saying that by far it was the best rugby the boys have played this season. Our game structure finally clicked and the boys used the space really well. Some great support play and quick play at the breakdowns allowed us to control the game in attack. Ellon had some big players in their forwards, but our defence quickly cut them down, often before the gain line.

S4 continued their good form and remain unbeaten this season after securing a win at Morrison’s along with the 2nd XV. 1XV lost in a game that was similar to last week in that much of the opposition’s success came from our mistakes. There is a lot of frustration here but the boys have a will to put things right for next week.

Girls Hockey

S3 continued their run of good form with a solid win at home on Monday against Gordonstoun in their 2nd round match of the Scottish Cup. Sadly Galashiels Academy cancelled the 1st XI Girls Scottish Cup game on Wednesday, but it has been rescheduled for next week. 

On Saturday morning our P6 girls enjoyed a mixture of training and a friendly triangular tournament against the P5-7 boys. Everyone worked really hard with the players feeling pretty tired by the end of the hour! Primary 7 Gordonians played at home against St Margaret’s where the girls had plenty of goal scoring opportunities but couldn’t quite get their aim right. 

S1A had great shape and really thought hard about passing options and taking the ball wide in their home win against St Margaret’s. We were lucky to have lots of players available and everyone was able to play a half, showing excellent teamwork. 

Our S3s travelled down to Glenalmond where the rising sun cast its golden rays across the sky but unfortunately this soon turned heavy rain. The S3 rotation eventually broke from the shackles and realised soon that the passing game, not only easy on the eye, proved that this was the way the ball ended up in the goal. Player of the Match was shared by Caitlin A and Sophia H, who contributed well to what was a good end to a winning week for S3 hockey.

We took a Senior Girls mixed team to Glenalmond on Saturday, with a dozen girls that had never played together before. Despite this they put on a performance like they were veterans who had been a team for years. They were set the challenge of playing with high tempo, with width as well as height and most importantly with real confidence! The girls delivered all three in abundance with what Mr Stuart called ‘the performance of the season’ with some exceptional hockey. It was a great win for the team with some girls playing positions for the first time ever and delivering at such a good level, leaving Mr Stuart feeling very proud of the team.

Boys Hockey

The Boys 1st XI started well on Wednesday in their 2nd round Scottish Cup match against Fettes College. They were up against a physical Fettes team, dictating the majority of the possession in the first half. Defensively the team were sound, not allowing Fettes any opportunities on goal and keeping their most dangerous players quiet. Unfortunately, no goals came as the half drew to a close, a lack of composure around the circle meant the half finished 0-0. The second half was a different story, a defensive mistake gifted Fettes the opener. The game opened up as the team chased an equalizer with the game flowing end to end. We were finally rewarded with a goal with less than five minutes left, a fast counter attack was finished off well. As the game neared the end, another defensive error gave Fettes possession near the circle, and with less than thirty seconds left, it was heartbreak for the 1sts. One piece of individual brilliance left our goalkeeper with no chance as the ball rocketed into the net. A hugely disappointing end to the Cup campaign for a team who has put everything in so far this season.

On Saturday morning the P5-7 boys enjoyed their first ever game for RGC in a friendly tournament with our P5-7 girls. There was lots of enthusiasm on display, despite the unpleasant downpour that descended on Countesswells during their session! There were no fixtures for our senior school boys hockey teams on Saturday.

Team of the Week

Our Team of the Week this week is S4 Rugby. This is very well deserved as they have had such a great start to their year, remaining unbeaten. Consistency has been key, highlighted by their winning performance on Saturday, away from home.
