Reservoir Raiders achieve 2nd place in STEM in the Pipeline

Congratulations to Jack E, Will C, Aiden L and Pawan S, aka Reservoir Raiders, for their fantastic achievement in this year’s STEM in the Pipeline.

A pivotal event in TechFest's annual program, it offers S6 pupils an opportunity to engage in a practical project within the Energy Industry. Each stage of the process not only enables pupils to enhance their understanding of STEM subjects but also fosters the development of valuable transferable skills, both individually and collaboratively within a team.

In September, twenty teams embarked on the competition, and thirteen successfully presented a field development plan.

Ms Pathakji, Joint Assistant Head of Mathematics, shared: “The team did incredibly well and confidently answered all of the judges' questions. They came up with an excellent plan and really thought about how to make the project sustainable. They worked really well as a team and Lucy Taylor (former RGC pupil) and Ross McConnell from CNOOC International, were great mentors.”

The team shared: “The project highlighted to us how important the oil and gas industry is now and how it always will be in the future, and how extracting oil can be done sustainably. It taught us how to work as a team, and how to present and interact with industry professionals. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we would highly recommend the project to anyone who is interested in STEM subjects.”

Participating in industry competitions provides our pupils with valuable opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios, fostering skill development, enhancing problem-solving abilities, and promoting teamwork - all essential components for future success in diverse professional environments.

Pupils from Aberdeen Grammar School, Albyn School, Banchory Academy, Ellon Academy, Hazlehead Academy, Kemnay Academy, Lochside Academy, Meldrum Academy, Robert Gordon’s College and two teams from both Cults Academy and Inverurie Academy taking part.
