"Which pairs of prime numbers have a sum of 50?"

The MacRobert Hall was abuzz with mathematical energy on Friday 13 March as Robert Gordon’s College hosted the regional heat of the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Team Challenge.

Teams of S1-S2 pupils travelled from across Scotland to attend, from Dundee to as far afield as Shetland, to compete for a coveted place in the national final. One question that sparked particular discussion asked: Which pairs of prime numbers have a sum of 50? Challenges like this encouraged pupils to think creatively and systematically under pressure, showcasing both their mathematical ability and their collaborative spirit.

RGC entered two teams in the competition, who both represented themselves and the College with great pride. The teams solved problems in groups of four, completed a cross number in pairs, and finished the competition with a fast-paced relay round. Emily C and Avni M (both S1), along with Clara B and Annika S (both S2), delivered a confident and impressive performance throughout the event. Meanwhile, Christopher R-J and Thanu S (both S1), together with Ayden L and Max D (both S2), competed brilliantly and narrowly missed out on a place in the National Final, finishing as runners-up after a closely contested competition.

Mr Fogiel, Head of Mathematics, shared: “RGC has a proud history in the Junior Team Challenge, and it was an honour to host the regional heat for the second year in succession. Our pupils participate in a large number of national and international competitions organised by the UKMT. The next opportunity for our S1 and S2 pupils to flex their mathematical skills is after the Easter break, and we cannot wait to see what they achieve.”
