Empowering Futures: S5 pupils commence work experience programme

Work experience is crucial for school pupils as it provides them with real-world exposure, practical skills, and insights into various professions, helping them bridge the gap between classroom learning and the demands of the professional world.

Every year, S5 pupils participate in our work experience initiative led by Miss Braid.  During the Autumn term, former pupils and employers visit S5 to share valuable insights into a wide range of professions.

Miss Braid, University and Career Assistant, shared: “Although our pupils experience insight and exposure to future pathways throughout their school education at Robert Gordon’s, the structured work experience programme in S5 aims to inspire and instill essential skills for both work and life outside the classroom. The Autumn assembly is a key opportunity for our pupils to officially start their research and application processes for work experience opportunities in June.

“The work experience programme can be life changing for many. Several of our previous participants have altered their intended university course pathway, with some even securing employment post-education, attributing their success to the opportunities provided by this programme.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of our alumni and industry supporters who play a crucial role in engaging young minds, creating opportunities, and fostering future success. This support enables our pupils to actively participate in the world of work and beyond.”

Supporting appropriate career aspirations which match the interests and talents of our pupils is an integral part of the pastoral programme at Robert Gordon’s College. Our pastoral team, including the Careers team, provide individual support to meet the needs of all our pupils. They work collaboratively with the wider pastoral team to support and advise pupils about their subject choices prior to entering S3, S5 and S6.  College School Links courses, which can be studied in parallel with our curriculum, are also offered to pupils where appropriate. The Gordonian Mentoring Programme also offers senior pupils and young alumni access to the wealth of experience residing within the Gordonian community. This programme was established to formalise ways for young Gordonians to learn from experienced Gordonians who can help advise and guide when considering career paths and life beyond school.

S5 are now in the process of researching potential opportunities for June 2024. They will work with the Careers team every step of the way and develop valuable transferable skills and experience in research, communication and interpersonal skills along the way. Some pupils also participate in additional work experience opportunities outwith the school timetable to support their higher education applications. For example ‘Doctors at Work’ and volunteering opportunities.
