RGC ‘Go All In’ for National Year of Reading 2026

As part of the National Year of Reading, Robert Gordon's College is proud to be taking part in a nationwide celebration of books, stories and the lifelong benefits of reading.

Throughout the year, pupils from across the College will have several opportunities to engage with reading in new and exciting ways. From themed library events and book recommendations to reading challenges and author visits, our programme is designed to spark enthusiasm and encourage exploration.

Mrs Ficken, Junior School Librarian shared: “It's fantastic to have an extra bright spotlight shining on books and reading throughout the whole of this year. The Go All In campaign is increasing media coverage of children's fiction, and on the radio on Monday morning it was wonderful to hear Children's Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce, and award-winning author Katherine Rundell, recommending their favourite children's books, all which are in the Junior School Library, and are borrowed regularly! This term we will be continuing with our tradition of peer-to-peer recommendations - the children love to tell their friends about the books they've just enjoyed. With World Book Day and our Pre-Loved Book Sale just around the corner in early March, the buzz about books and reading is growing to ever greater levels! This World Book Day I'm particularly looking forward to hosting our new annual House Book Quiz which is designed to appeal to all of our readers and age groups, and there will be lots of house points to win.”

Mrs Bukalska, Senior School Librarian said: “The National Year of Reading is a great opportunity to bring attention to literature, the benefits of reading, and libraries - the heart of this very important movement. Pupils have so much to look forward to this year, with a wide range of events and activities, including the Book Fair, National Reading Competitions, and World Book Day.

“I am delighted that our pupils have shown such interest in the Book Club. It is a wonderful way to share recommendations and discuss books. It is so satisfying to see pupils developing an interest in reading, and extremely rewarding to listen to enthusiastic reviews from our keen readers.”

Mrs Porteous, Head of English said: “We’re delighted that the National Year of Reading will place extra emphasis on the importance of reading. We cannot shout loud enough about how beneficial reading is in so many areas of our lives and the advantages it has for our young people. While the benefits to attainment and literacy will always be crucial, it has never been more important for our pupils to read widely so that they can develop their empathy and critical thinking skills.”

We are also keen to involve our wider school community of families, staff and alumni and we will be sharing resources and ideas to support this.
