A set of historic bagpipes, generously donated by former pupil and original pipe band member Kenneth Thomson Melvin, Class of ‘50, will make their debut at this week’s Founder's Day celebration.

Contingent Commander Sumner shared: “The refurbished bagpipes, believed to be ebony and ivory Lawrie bagpipes, hold deep significance and will be recognised at RGC as the ‘Founder's Day Bagpipes,’ They will be played annually during the parade by a selected piper. After undergoing refurbishment over the summer, the bagpipes will be played for the first time by Pipe Sgt Cameron S (S6).

“At school, Kenneth was one of the founding members of the Robert Gordon's College Cadet Force Pipe Band, formed in August 1945. His wish is that these bagpipes will continue to be used by future generations of pipers at the College, preserving the band's heritage for years to come.”

The Contingent Commander of the CCF at the time, supported the creation of a Pipe Band and rallied former pupils for donations to secure funding and instruments. As a result, six sets of Brazilwood pipes were purchased from renowned Pipe Major Robert Reid, with additional bagpipes donated by supporters.

Pipe Major Cherry Anderson of the 1st Battalion, the Gordon Highlanders, was appointed as the first piping tutor for the new pipe band.

The legacy of the band has flourished over the decades, with Kenneth’s recent donation adding a new chapter to its rich history.
