Pupils from S1, S2 and S3 enjoyed watching a live performance of "Ballad of Mulan" this week.

Actress Michelle Yim brought the classic Chinese folk tale to life for the first performance back in the Craig Centre for Performing Arts since 2020.

Mrs Adam, Teacher of Mandarin shared: “Pupils showed great interest in the original poem and Chinese history during this period of time. They had many interesting questions for the actress after the show.”

For ten years Mulan disguised as a man and fought for the Chinese Empire, but now the fighting is coming to an end, one last battle and she will be going home – but can she return to her old life and become a woman again?

Mrs Lamont, Head of Modern Languages said: “It was fantastic to see everyone together as a physical audience and enjoy the performance in person.

“This search for identity in a violent world is a great exploration of Chinese culture for pupils and a fantastic celebration on International Women's Day during our Diversity week at RGC.”

"The Ballad of Mulan" is British-Chinese actress Michelle Yim's third solo-show commission and was supported using funding from Arts Council England. The production previewed at Buxton Fringe 2019, debuted at Edinburgh Fringe 2019, and then toured UK venues and schools during Chinese New Year 2020.
