In a poignant ceremony last night, the College community gathered for the annual RGC Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Service of Remembrance.
The service began in MacRobert Hall with a welcome from Contingent Commander Sumner who shared with the audience how this year's theme not only focused on paying their respects to the fallen, but also remembering the innocents of war.
Contingent Commander Sumner shared: “In 2024 as well as paying our respects to the fallen we are remembering the innocents of war. In particular this year I want you to think about these war children, most of whom are the same age as our pupils. This year we have added a Memorial Bench to the War Memorial as a symbol of gratitude for service and sacrifice of Gordonians involved in war and conflict. The Unknown Tommy statue stood in the quadrangle as a silent guardian, representing the countless soldiers who served with courage, resilience, and dedication, yet remain unnamed. Lest We Forget.”
Throughout the service, attendees were moved by readings and poems shared by pupils C/Sgt Maddox, Cpl Grace, Cpl Gby, Flt Sgt Alice, L/Cpl Eli, Cdt Amber, Cdt Amy, Pipe Major James, and Flt Sgt Leon. Dylan (S6) played the Last Post and Reveille, and the Lament was piped by Larry (P7).
Major (Rtd.) Nicholas Champion M.B.E. (Class of ‘90) gave an inspiring address to the cadets before they assembled in the quadrangle for the formal inspection. Major Champion’s presence and thorough inspection underscored the significance of the occasion, reminding everyone of the discipline, respect, and dedication that the CCF embodies. Wreaths were then laid at our war memorial by Major Champion, Mr Macpherson, Head of College, and Pipe Major James LLC.
Major Champion opened proceedings for the award of The Gordon Campbell Sword with a moving message about Cpl Gordon Campbell, RGC Class of '97, of the Royal Marines and Special Boat Service, who lost his life in 2006 while serving his country. The sword was donated by the Campbell family in memory of their son and brother. Gordon Campbell Snr presented the 2024 award to Connor McC in recognition of his exceptional leadership, dedication, and service within the RGC CCF.
