Cristina Evans from the Class of 2008 was shown a warm welcome back to school to meet with senior pupils as part of the S6 Lecture Series. Cristina, now a Digital Transformation Lead at Xodus, formerly a Data Strategist,  shared insights from her career journey and offered advice to pupils on navigating the modern workplace. After leaving RGC, Cristina studied Geography and Maths at the University of St Andrews, before completing a Master’s in Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Management at King’s College London, where she was awarded the Best Thesis Award. She then returned to St Andrews to complete a PhD in Hydrological Modelling in just three months.

Speaking to S6 pupils in a Q&A session with Dr Gray, RGC’s Head of Geography and Cristina’s former teacher, Cristina reflected on her transition from academia to the energy sector. “There were very few jobs in Hydrology or mathematical modelling, especially in Aberdeen,” she explained. “I had to adapt, reframe my CV, and take every opportunity that came my way.”

Cristina emphasised the importance of transferable skills over technical knowledge, highlighting problem-solving, presentation abilities, and adaptability as key to her success. She also encouraged pupils to proactively network, find common ground with colleagues, and build professional relationships.

Discussing her current role in Data Strategy, Cristina described how she helps organisations manage and organise their information, from governance and storage solutions to facilitating people to manage their own data. “The most surprising part of my role is how many people I interact with,” she said. “It’s not all desk-based work.”

Cristina also reflected on her time at RGC, calling it “the best time of your life” and urging pupils to cheri sh their school years. When asked about the impact of AI on her work, she noted that technology is only as effective as the data provided, reinforcing the importance of strong data management skills.

Her message to pupils was clear: be adaptable, take opportunities, develop transferable skills, and don’t be afraid to explore new paths. Cristina’s visit provided both inspiration and practical guidance for the S6 pupils as they plan their own futures.
