Austin McC and Rebecca H (S4) have secured a place in the second round of Scotland’s largest annual schools debating competition, The Donald Dewar Debating Tournament, held in memory of the former First Minister, Donald Dewar MSP.

In the opening round, the pair were tasked with proposing the motion:  “This house believes that high school pupils should be required to work either a paid job or complete volunteer hours during the summer break.” Their case drew on economic, social and emotional considerations, forming a clear and compelling argument that was praised by the judging panel.

The tournament, renowned for its high standards and wide participation across Scotland, offers pupils valuable opportunities to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and engage with current issues.

Miss Colquhoun, who co-runs the Senior Debating Club alongside Miss Braid, said: “This result highlights both the dedication and growing expertise of the two pupils competing, as well as the positive influence of the wider debate squad. Senior Debate Club meets each week, and offers pupils a space to refine their skills, challenge their thinking and support one another’s development. Our ethos is rooted in the belief that active participation in democracy begins with understanding how to debate well, how to listen, analyse, question and present ideas with clarity and confidence.”

The team will now progress to round two, where they will compete against schools from across Scotland in early 2026.
