Finlay, Class of 2026 Vice-Captain, is looking ahead to an exciting new chapter, with a strong passion for both English and History. His interest in these subjects has been an important part of his academic journey at RGC, and he will now continue exploring them, alongside his developing interest in politics and the wider world, as he begins an undergraduate degree in History and Politics at the University of Edinburgh this autumn.

Alongside his studies, Finlay has developed a growing interest in sports media and journalism. Having begun writing for the Press and Journal during the last football season, he covered a number of professional fixtures up to SPFL League One level. He is now looking forward to continuing this work in Edinburgh, with opportunities to write for the sports pages of the Edinburgh Evening News already in the works.

Sport has also been an important part of Finlay’s wider school experience, including through sports commentating, providing an opportunity to combine his enthusiasm for sport with his developing communication and media skills.

Leadership and involvement in school life have been central to Finlay’s experience at RGC. From starting and running the school Darts Club with Mr Fogiel, to chairing the Student Representative Committee, he has embraced opportunities to contribute to the wider school community. His leadership journey culminated in the privilege of serving as School Vice-Captain during S6.

Finlay has also attended events highlighting the impact of the RGC Bursary programme, gaining an insight into the difference that the school’s wider community and support can make to pupils and their opportunities.

Reflecting on his time at RGC, Finlay said: “RGC has played a fundamental role in my development academically, socially and beyond the classroom.” He also reflected with pride on what he has achieved during his final year, particularly in the face of personal challenges, and highlighted the invaluable guidance and support he has received from staff throughout his time at the School.

“I truly believe I would not be the person I am today without my six years at Schoolhill,” Finlay said. “I leave RGC with an enormous amount of gratitude and many happy memories, while looking forward to beginning the next chapter of my academic and professional journey in Edinburgh.”

With a passion for English and History, a growing career interest in sports media, and a strong record of leadership and community involvement, Finlay leaves RGC ready to embrace the opportunities ahead at the University of Edinburgh.
