Andy Yuill, a former pupil of Robert Gordon’s College (RGC) Class of ‘83, is Managing Director of London based company SMC Design - supplying end-to-end interior design services to the marine industry, largely for cruise liners and ferries. Andy shared his experience of leaving RGC to embark on a creative path that has taken him all over the world. Andy brought his expertise and advice in navigating creative industries and how to make a success in your chosen field. SMC design is a renowned interdisciplinary design consultancy which is celebrated for its innovative approach to interior design, branding, and art consultancy.
Andy’s captivating talk to the S6 pupils delved into the intricacies of his work, particularly his passion for designing the interiors of cruise ships. He emphasised the importance of integrated design, where various disciplines converge to create transformative spaces. From bars and restaurants to luxurious spas and state-of-the-art gyms, SMC Design’s projects are renowned for their elegance and functionality. Andy talked through the planning and design process for the refurbishment of an existing Cruiseliner - detailing how the 18 month long design process is researched, managed and illustrated ready for sign-off by their client. Andy explained the importance of always understanding your client and their requirements, working hand in hand with them throughout the project to ensure the brief is being met and costs considered.
Andy credited his former art teacher, Mr Beaton, for igniting his passion for design. Inspired by his teacher, he pursued interior design at Napier University, where he gained invaluable practical experience. After graduating, he embarked on a journey to London, armed with his portfolio and unwavering determination. His relentless pursuit of opportunities led him to his first job in Bethnal Green, followed by a full-time position at BPW, which later evolved into SMC Design.
Over the past 35 years, Andy has flourished in his role as Managing Director, relishing the challenges and rewards of his profession. He imparted valuable advice to the S6 students, urging them to prioritise their passions over financial gain. By focusing on what truly excites them, they can unlock their full potential and build fulfilling careers.
