Throughout her final year of school, Amber, Class of 2024, demonstrated exceptional commitment and service as the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for the City of Aberdeen. She also excelled as a senior cadet in the Robert Gordon’s College Combined Cadet Force and served as a Young Leader for the Beaver Scouts.
With straight As in Advanced Higher Physics, Advanced Higher Mathematics, Higher Economics and Higher Graphic Communication, Amber is set to continue her academic journey at the University of Edinburgh, to study Physics.
Discussing her passion for Physics, Amber shared: “Physics has been my favourite subject throughout the entirety of my time at school and I realised that this is where both my strengths, and more importantly, my interest lies. I always knew I wanted to study at a Scottish university and so I’m excited to soon be living right in the centre of its capital city.”
Amber said her co-curricular activities, “gave me time to have a breather and focus on something other than general relativity or second-order differential equations, which was definitely needed.”
Reflecting on her time at the College, Amber commented: “Looking back now, one of my favourite aspects of school has been watching myself develop and change for the better by making use of all of the opportunities available. I can’t believe how much I’ve grown since I joined S1. I think being a part of the CCF especially helped me to build my confidence, self-discipline and teamwork skills, something I know will be invaluable in the coming years. In addition to that, it was something that I just really enjoyed, and I think everyone should be able to have something like that.
“I’ve heard countless people, both teachers and pupils, say that staying on for S6 allows you to become more independent and have more flexibility about what you want to do and how. I agree. Little things like having study periods, or being able to use the S6 science labs, or even just being treated more like adults I think has prepared us well for university and life outside of school in general. Also, In S6 you undoubtedly have much more of a closer relationship with your subject teachers, which has definitely been one of the reasons why I managed to do well this year.”
Mrs Jappy, Head of Science, highlighted: “I am delighted that Amber is pursuing her passion for Physics at Edinburgh University. It was clear from her early years in RGC that she had the interest and desire to do well in Physics and the staff at the College have certainly been instrumental in igniting Amber’s interest; it has been an absolute pleasure to see this interest grow and develop into a passion.
In a field where females remain underrepresented, we aim to encourage and engage pupils through our dedicated teaching staff and exciting CoCurricular activities; we hope that Amber will keep in touch and come back to inspire future pupils, especially girls, into Physics. We wish Amber all the very best in her studies.”
